Pokhara International Airport is close to the city, so transport costs are low by any standard. The main question is whether you negotiate on arrival or lock in a price beforehand.
Taxi fares
Taxis at Pokhara Airport do not use meters, and no authority publishes a fare table for them. You negotiate the fare before getting in. This is standard practice across Nepal and not an attempt to overcharge you, though quoted prices to tourists tend to start higher than what locals pay.

This has an honest consequence we should be straight about: there is no verifiable price to quote you. Any specific figure -- ours or anyone else's -- would be a guess about a number that is set fresh in each conversation, and it would go stale as soon as the season turned. What we can give you is the ranking. From the airport, roughly cheapest to dearest:
1. Mahendrapul (city center) and Damside -- short runs 2. Lakeside (Phewa Lake area) -- about 4 km, where most visitors go 3. Sarangkot -- about 12 km, uphill and winding 4. Begnas Lake -- furthest of the four
The first price a driver quotes is usually negotiable. A polite counter-offer of 60-70% of their opening price is a reasonable starting point. If the driver says no, the next one often agrees. The single most useful thing you can do is ask your hotel in advance what a fair fare looks like for your destination -- they know the going rate this month, and we do not.
Private transfer costs
Pre-booked transfers cost more than a well-negotiated taxi but come with fixed pricing and better vehicles, and the price is agreed before you fly rather than on the pavement. They are available to Lakeside, Sarangkot and Begnas Lake, and typically include meet-and-greet at arrivals and luggage assistance.
Hotel pickups
Many Lakeside hotels offer airport pickup, sometimes complimentary and sometimes for a modest fee -- ask what they charge when you book, as it varies by property. If you have already booked accommodation, check this before arranging separate transport. Some guesthouses include it for stays of three nights or more.
What affects pricing
Season matters. During peak trekking months (October-November, March-April), drivers see more tourists and prices drift upward. During monsoon season (June-August), fewer visitors mean softer prices. Time of day also plays a role -- late afternoon arrivals when drivers are heading home may see slightly higher quotes.
Currency note
All local transactions are in Nepali Rupees (NPR). ATMs are available in Lakeside but not at the airport terminal. If you arrive without local currency, your negotiating position for a taxi weakens. Having some NPR cash ready, even a small amount from an exchange at Kathmandu or your home country, helps. Private transfers can often be paid online in advance, avoiding this issue entirely.
The practical reality
By global standards this is a cheap airport run whichever way you do it -- the distances are short. The choice between negotiating a taxi and booking a transfer is less about money and more about whether you want a smooth, no-hassle arrival or are happy to engage with the local way of doing things.
