Getting from Pokhara Airport to the City with Kids

Nepal is a wonderful destination for families, but the ground transportation infrastructure is different from what you might be used to. Here is what to expect at Pokhara Airport when traveling with children.

Car seats: the reality

Car seat use in Nepal is not standard practice. Local taxis will not have child seats, and drivers may not understand the request. Nepal does not enforce car seat laws the way Western countries do, and most vehicles are not equipped for them.

If car seat safety is important to you (and it should be), your only option is to pre-book a private transfer and explicitly request the appropriate seat for your child's age and weight. Confirm the request before your trip. Alternatively, bring your own travel car seat -- it adds weight but gives you certainty.

Vehicle size

Local taxis in Pokhara are small cars. A family of four with two suitcases and a stroller will not fit comfortably. You would need two taxis or a pre-booked larger vehicle. An SUV or van transfer accommodates a family and all their luggage in a single trip.

The airport to Lakeside with kids

The drive from Pokhara Airport to Lakeside takes 15-25 minutes. The road is paved but can have potholes and unpredictable traffic -- motorcycles, pedestrians, and other vehicles all share the road. It is a short ride, but it can feel chaotic if you are not used to South Asian traffic patterns. Children tend to find it fascinating rather than frightening.

Strollers and gear

If you are bringing a stroller, be aware that Lakeside sidewalks are uneven and narrow. Many families find a carrier or sling more practical in Pokhara. For the airport transfer itself, make sure your vehicle has enough trunk space for the stroller and bags.

Food and rest

The airport has basic facilities but limited food options. If your children are hungry after the flight, it is better to get to Lakeside quickly where restaurants and shops are plentiful. The short transfer time works in your favor here.

Practical tips for families

  • Book a larger vehicle (SUV or van) if you have more than one child or significant luggage.
  • Request a child seat when booking your transfer and confirm it is available.
  • Have some Nepali Rupees ready for small purchases, though most Lakeside hotels accept cards.
  • The altitude in Pokhara (around 800 meters) is comfortable and does not require acclimatization.
  • If your child is prone to car sickness, the road from the airport is relatively straight and smooth by Nepal standards.
  • Ask your hotel about family-friendly pickup services -- many Lakeside hotels are happy to send a larger vehicle.
