Getting from Galeao Airport (GIG) to Rio de Janeiro

Galeao International Airport sits about 20 km from Copacabana and the main hotel districts of Rio de Janeiro. Rio's yellow taxis are metered on the city tariff — R$6.30 to start plus R$3.85 per km on tarifa 1, rising to R$4.62 per km on tarifa 2 (nights from 21:00 to 06:00, Sundays and holidays), per the Municipal Transport Secretariat's schedule in force since 1 January 2026. On those numbers the 20 km into Copacabana comes to roughly R$85-100 on the meter, before the Linha Vermelha toll and before any time stopped in traffic (the meter charges R$48.51 per hour while stationary). The BRT bus is the cheapest option at the flat municipal fare of R$5.00, but requires a connection and is not practical with heavy luggage. A pre-booked transfer is fixed when you book, so you know the price before you land.

Rio traffic is unpredictable. During morning and evening rush hours (7-9 AM, 5-8 PM), travel time to the Zona Sul beaches can easily double — and on a meter, time is money. If you are arriving late at night, a pre-booked transfer is the safest and most stress-free choice.

After clearing immigration and customs — which can take 20–60 minutes depending on flight volume — you exit into the arrivals hall of either Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. Terminal 2 handles most international flights.

The arrivals area has currency exchange counters, but rates are poor. ATMs from Bradesco and Banco do Brasil are available and generally give better rates. You will need Brazilian Reais (BRL) for taxis if you have not pre-booked.

Free airport Wi-Fi is available but unreliable. If you need to contact your transfer driver, consider buying a local SIM card from the Claro or Vivo kiosks in the arrivals hall.

The yellow taxis operate from official ranks outside arrivals and are metered on the city tariff set by the Municipal Transport Secretariat: R$6.30 bandeirada, then R$3.85 per km Monday to Saturday 06:00–21:00 (tarifa 1) and R$4.62 per km at night, on Sundays and on holidays (tarifa 2). Stationary time is charged at R$48.51 per hour, which is why Rio traffic matters to your fare and not just your patience. The Linha Vermelha toll is added on top — ask what it will be before you set off.

There are also taxi cooperative desks inside the terminal (Transcoopass, Cootramo) selling a fixed price before you go. Note that these generally operate in the pricier especial/executivo category rather than as ordinary yellow taxis, so the fixed price can be well above what the meter would show. That may still be worth it for the certainty — just do not assume it is the same tariff. Ask for the figure at the desk and compare it against the metered rates above.

Ride-hailing apps like 99 and Uber work at GIG, but pickup points can be confusing and drivers sometimes cancel. They price dynamically and quote you in the app before you confirm — that quote is the only number worth relying on. Surge pricing during peak hours can push costs close to taxi prices.

The BRT Transcarioca bus connects the airport to the Alvorada terminal in Barra da Tijuca, where you can transfer to other lines. The fare is the flat municipal fare of R$5.00, the same on buses, BRT and the VLT. It is cheap but slow, crowded during rush hours, and not practical with suitcases.

There is no zone chart for Rio taxis — the yellow taxis run on a meter, so what you pay is the city tariff applied to your actual distance and time. The published tariff, in force since 1 January 2026, is:

Work your own route from that. For the roughly 20 km to Copacabana or Ipanema the meter reaches about R$85 on tarifa 1 and about R$99 on tarifa 2, before tolls and before traffic time. Centro and Lapa are closer, so less; Barra da Tijuca and Niteroi are further, so more.

Two things get added that the per-km maths does not capture. Tolls on the Linha Vermelha expressway are charged on top for taxis — confirm the amount with the driver before you set off. And time stopped in traffic is billed at R$48.51 an hour, so a rush-hour crawl costs real money, not just time.

Many international flights land at GIG between 10 PM and 2 AM. The airport stays open 24 hours, but services thin out considerably after midnight. The BRT bus stops running around 11 PM.

Late-night taxis are available but the area around GIG is not considered safe for walking or waiting outside. A pre-booked transfer with a name board inside the terminal is the recommended approach for night arrivals. Drivers will wait even if your flight is delayed — just make sure your booking includes flight tracking.

If you are traveling with children and multiple suitcases, a pre-booked transfer is the practical choice. Standard taxis in Rio are compact sedans that struggle with more than two large bags.

Pre-booked transfers allow you to request a larger vehicle (minivan or SUV) and, critically, a child seat if needed. Brazilian law requires child restraints for children under 7.5 years, and regular taxis almost never have them.

Luggage carts are available for free inside the terminal. The walk to the taxi rank is short and covered, but it can get warm and humid.

For pre-booked transfers, drivers typically wait in the arrivals hall holding a name board. The meeting point is usually just after you exit customs, near the currency exchange counters in Terminal 2.

For taxis, follow signs to the official rank outside the arrivals exit. The cooperative desk (Transcoopass or Cootramo) is inside the terminal — you pay there and receive a voucher before going to the car.

For ride-hailing pickups, designated areas are marked outside but signage can be confusing. Drivers often call to coordinate, so a working phone helps.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if: you are arriving for the first time, traveling with family, arriving late at night, or want a guaranteed fixed price with no surprises.

Choose an official taxi if: you are a confident traveler, speak some Portuguese, and want flexibility without pre-planning.

Choose a ride-hailing app if: you have a working local SIM or Wi-Fi, are comfortable with the app in Portuguese, and are budget-conscious.

Choose the BRT bus if: you are a solo backpacker with a small bag, speak Portuguese, and are arriving during daytime hours.
