Start with the thing most guides will not tell you: nobody publishes a fare for this journey. Bangladesh has no regulated airport taxi tariff, and the airport's own guidance is that taxis do not run meters and the fare must be negotiated with the driver. What affects the price
Traffic is the biggest variable. Ride-share apps use dynamic pricing, so a trip during peak hours (7–10 AM, 4–9 PM) costs substantially more than the same trip at midnight. Pre-booked transfers and pre-paid taxis are fixed before you set off, regardless of how long the crawl takes — which in Dhaka is a real advantage, not a technicality.
Destination distance matters. Uttara (the nearest major area) is just 5–8 km and costs significantly less. Old Dhaka and Motijheel, at 25+ km, are the most expensive.
Vehicle type plays a role with pre-booked transfers — an SUV or minivan prices above a sedan, and your quote will show it.
Hidden costs to watch for
Unmetered taxis outside the pre-paid counter routinely quote tourists multiples of the going rate. This is the single most common way visitors overpay in Dhaka, and it is exactly why the counter exists. Use it, or confirm the fare firmly before departing.
There is no official airport surcharge, but some drivers add one anyway. If challenged, they usually back down. Some also try to pass on airport parking fees — with a pre-booked transfer, parking is always included.

For most travelers, a pre-booked private transfer to Gulshan or Banani offers the best balance of cost, comfort, and reliability, and the premium over a pre-paid taxi is modest in absolute terms. You get a confirmed driver, a price fixed before you land, and no negotiation at the kerb after a long flight.
