How the taxi fare is set
Rio yellow taxis are metered on the tariff published by the Municipal Transport Secretariat, in force since 1 January 2026: R$6.30 bandeirada, R$3.85 per km Monday to Saturday 06:00–21:00, R$4.62 per km at night, on Sundays and on holidays, and R$48.51 per hour stopped. Tolls are extra.
The cooperative desks inside the terminal sell a fixed price instead of a meter. They generally operate in the pricier especial/executivo category, so their number can be well above the metered rate — which is the main reason the taxi-versus-transfer gap is often smaller than it first appears. Ask for the figure and compare it against both the meter and your transfer quote.
When the taxi makes sense
If you are traveling solo or as a couple with one bag each, speak some Portuguese, and arrive during normal daytime hours, an official yellow taxi is perfectly fine. The rank is well-organized and you will not wait more than a few minutes. Drivers know the main routes well. Check the meter is running on tarifa 1 during the day — tarifa 2 is the night and Sunday rate.
When the transfer makes sense
A pre-booked transfer is the better choice when you are arriving late at night, traveling with children, carrying more than two large bags, or visiting Rio for the first time. The driver meets you inside the terminal with a name board, the price is locked in regardless of traffic, and the vehicle is the right size for your group.
The safety consideration also matters. The area around GIG is not one where you want to be standing outside with luggage at midnight. Having someone waiting inside removes that concern entirely.
The real price difference
It depends on which taxi you actually get. Against a metered yellow taxi in daytime traffic, a transfer is a genuine premium. Against the fixed-price cooperative desk, which sells the dearer especial/executivo category, the gap narrows considerably — and at night, on a Sunday, or in a rush-hour crawl, the meter climbs while a transfer price does not. Get both numbers for your actual arrival and compare them, rather than assuming either way.
