Getting from Milan Bergamo Airport to your destination

Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport (BGY) is marketed as a Milan airport, but it's actually 50 km from Milan city center and only 5 km from Bergamo. To Bergamo: the ATB city bus costs 3.00 € (15 min). To Milan: the direct airport coach is 8 € with Terravision (50-70 min to Milano Centrale). Taxis and pre-booked transfers cost many times that — quoted per journey rather than from a tariff. If you're actually going to Milan, factor in the distance — this is not a quick transfer.

BGY is a budget airline hub (Ryanair's main Milan base). The airport has one terminal — modern enough but basic. After landing, baggage claim is quick, and you exit into the arrivals hall. Bus ticket counters and automatic machines are in the arrivals area. The bus stops are right outside the exit.

Taxis wait outside but are limited — this is a smaller airport. Free WiFi is available. ATMs are in the arrivals hall.

Airport bus to Milan (Terravision/Autostradale/Orio Shuttle): Multiple companies run coaches from BGY to Milano Centrale (main train station). Terravision publishes 8 € one way, departing every 20-30 minutes, taking about 55 minutes. Autostradale and Orio Shuttle run the same route at their own prices — check each operator's site, they are broadly similar. Journey times stretch to 70 minutes in heavy traffic. This is the most popular option and it works well — comfortable coaches, direct service.

Airport bus to Bergamo (ATB Line 1): The airport-to-city route is a three-zone journey, which ATB prices at Tariffa C — 3.00 €, valid for 90 minutes. It takes 15 minutes to Bergamo train station and runs frequently. From Bergamo station, you can take a train to Milan (about 50 minutes, ~6 €). If you plan to ride around Bergamo the same day, ATB's "Intera Rete" 24-hour tourist ticket at 8.50 € covers the whole network including the airport.

Taxi to Bergamo: 10-15 minutes and inexpensive — it is barely 5 km. Italian taxis are metered; the rank is outside arrivals.

Taxi to Milan: 50-70 minutes and very expensive — it is a 50 km run on the A4 motorway, mostly outside the Comune di Bergamo where the city tariff stops applying, so agree the price with the driver before you set off rather than assuming the meter. Only makes sense for groups splitting the cost, and even then the coach is hard to argue with.

Uber/ride-hailing: Limited availability at BGY. Italy's Uber situation is complicated — UberBlack works in Milan but regular UberX doesn't. Don't rely on this.

Train: No direct train from the airport. You'd need to bus to Bergamo station first (3.00 €), then a Trenord train to Milan (~6 €). Total: about 90 minutes and 9 €.

Pre-booked transfer: Priced per journey when you book, with the driver waiting in arrivals. Best for groups, families, or late-night arrivals.

Italian taxis are metered inside the comune, but a 50-85 km journey to Milan or the lakes runs well outside Bergamo's tariff area, where fares are agreed rather than metered. Ask the driver or your transfer provider for a figure before you set off — a range on a web page cannot tell you what a specific 85 km run in a specific vehicle will cost.

Note: The direct coach to Milan at 8 € makes taxis and transfers very hard to justify for individual travelers heading to Milan.

Airport buses to Milan run until about 12:30-1:00 AM, with the last bus matching the last scheduled flight. After that, options are limited: pre-booked transfers or trying to find a taxi (not guaranteed). For Bergamo, local buses run later but not all night. If your Ryanair flight is delayed past midnight, a pre-booked transfer is your safety net.

The airport bus to Milan is fine for families — comfortable coaches with luggage storage. But 50-70 minutes on a bus after a flight with young kids isn't ideal. For families heading to Milan, weigh the coach for the whole family (8 € each with Terravision, so about 32 € for four) against a transfer, which is priced per vehicle when you book. The convenience gap is real. Italian taxis don't carry child seats — request one with a transfer.

Airport buses: Stops are directly outside the arrivals exit. Multiple bus companies have their stops in a row — look for your company's name (Terravision, Autostradale, Orio Shuttle). Buy tickets inside at the counter or online.

Taxi: Rank is outside arrivals. May be limited — BGY is not a huge airport.

Pre-booked transfer: Drivers wait in the arrivals hall or just outside with a name sign.

Local bus to Bergamo: Same area as the airport buses, clearly marked.

• Going to Milan (budget): Direct coach to Milano Centrale. 8 € with Terravision, simple, frequent.
• Going to Milan (comfort): Pre-booked transfer. Door-to-door, especially useful with luggage.
• Going to Bergamo: ATB Line 1 bus (3.00 €) or a taxi. Both are easy; it is only 5 km.
• Visiting Bergamo first, then Milan: Take the bus to Bergamo, enjoy the beautiful upper town, then a Trenord train to Milan later (~6 €).
• Family with kids to Milan: Transfer if budget allows. Coach if not — it's comfortable enough.
• Going to Lake Como: Pre-booked transfer. No practical public transport from BGY — get a quote.
• Late night arrival: Pre-booked transfer. Don't risk empty taxi ranks.
