Getting from Ajaccio Airport to your destination

Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte Airport (AJA) is just 5 km from the city center — about a 10-minute drive. It's a small, seasonal airport that gets busy in summer. A metered taxi to the centre works out at roughly €9-15 by day and €12-22 at night and on Sundays, on the prefecture's 2026 tariff. The CAPAMOVE shuttle bus is €8, but you must buy the ticket before boarding — there are no sales on the bus. No train or metro. If you're heading to a beach resort or village elsewhere in Corsica, renting a car or pre-booking a transfer is the practical choice.

AJA is a small airport. One terminal, one baggage carousel, no long walks. You'll be through arrivals in 10-15 minutes on a good day. During peak summer (July-August), immigration for non-Schengen flights can take longer.

Outside the terminal, you'll find a small taxi rank, the bus stop, and car rental desks. It's straightforward — you can see everything from the exit doors. The airport has limited facilities: a small cafe, one ATM, and a few car rental offices.

Taxi: From the small rank outside arrivals. Corsican taxis are metered on a tariff the prefecture resets every year. For 2026 the meter starts at 2,17 EUR and then charges by the kilometre at one of four rates: 1,29 EUR by day (Monday to Saturday, 07:00-19:00) and 1,93 EUR at night, on Sundays and on public holidays — or double each of those (2,58 EUR and 3,87 EUR) when the driver has to come back to the rank empty. A coloured light on the meter shows which rate is running. There is a minimum fare of 8,00 EUR, a 2 EUR supplement for oversized bags or a fourth suitcase, and 4 EUR from the fifth passenger. Over the 5 km into Ajaccio that works out at roughly 9-15 EUR by day and roughly 12-22 EUR at night, on Sundays and on public holidays. The night and Sunday rate is exactly 50% above the daytime one — that is the tariff, not a driver improvising. CAPAMOVE airport shuttle — the Ajaccio agglomeration's bus network runs the shuttle between the airport and the city centre. Since 28 January 2026 it costs 8 EUR per trip for non-residents, and this part matters: you cannot buy a ticket on the bus. You have to buy before you board, through the CAPAMOVE app or by SMS. Buses run every 15 minutes Monday to Saturday, and every 30 minutes in the evening, on Sundays and on public holidays. It takes about 20 minutes with stops and thins out considerably in the evening.

Car rental: This is actually the most popular option for Corsica. The island has poor public transport outside cities, so most visitors rent a car. Hertz, Avis, Europcar, and local companies have desks at the airport. Book well in advance for summer — cars sell out.

Pre-booked transfer: priced and fixed when you book, so you know the number before you fly. Genuinely useful if you're going anywhere outside Ajaccio, where the taxi meter runs on the empty-return rate and a fixed quote is easier to plan around.

Walking/cycling: Don't. The road from the airport has no pedestrian path and cars drive fast.

Note: For destinations beyond 20 km, renting a car is almost always cheaper than a transfer. Corsican roads are winding and beautiful but slow — distances take longer than you'd expect. The taxi tariff is reset by prefectural order every year; check the current one before you travel.

AJA has very few late-night flights — most activity is between 7 AM and 9 PM. If you do arrive late, the shuttle bus won't be running. Taxis may or may not be at the rank. Pre-booking is strongly recommended for any arrival after 8 PM. There is no flat night supplement on Corsican taxis: instead the per-kilometre rate itself goes up by 50% from 7 PM (1,93 EUR instead of 1,29 EUR, or 3,87 EUR instead of 2,58 EUR if the driver returns empty).

The short distance to Ajaccio means most transport works for families. Taxis can handle 2-3 large bags. For larger families, pre-book a minivan transfer. Child seats are not standard in Corsican taxis — request one in advance if booking a transfer. If you're renting a car, add a child seat to your rental booking.

It's a tiny airport — the taxi rank is directly outside the exit, maybe 20 meters away. Transfer drivers wait just outside arrivals with a name sign. You can't miss them; there's really only one exit. Bus stop is to the right of the terminal exit.

• Staying in Ajaccio only: Taxi or shuttle bus. Simple and cheap — but buy the bus ticket on the app before you get to the stop.
• Exploring Corsica: Rent a car. Public transport between towns is minimal.
• Going to a specific resort/village: Pre-book a transfer if not renting a car.
• Family with luggage: Taxi or transfer. The bus is fine for light travelers.
• Budget solo traveler: Shuttle bus to Ajaccio, then figure out onward transport.
• Late arrival: Pre-booked transfer — taxis aren't guaranteed after 9 PM.
