Macau Airport (MFM) Transfer Guide

Macau International Airport is compact and sits on Taipa Island, about 5-10 minutes from the Cotai Strip casino resorts and 15-20 minutes from central Macau Peninsula. A taxi is metered on the government tariff — MOP 21 to start, covering the first 1,600 m, then MOP 2 for every 220 m — plus a MOP 8 surcharge for boarding at the airport rank, so the short hop to Cotai comes to roughly MOP 45-60 and the run to the Peninsula closer to MOP 90-125. Most major casino hotels run free shuttle buses from the airport. A pre-booked private transfer fixes the price before you fly and is the most comfortable option if you want a driver waiting at arrivals.

MFM is a small, manageable airport. After clearing immigration, you collect your bags and walk through a short arrivals hall. The entire process is fast -- you can be outside within 15-20 minutes of landing. Once you exit, you will see a taxi stand to the right and a bus pickup area to the left. Hotel shuttle buses line up at designated stops with clear signage. The airport is modern, air-conditioned, and well-signed in Chinese, Portuguese, and English.

Taxi: Clean, metered, and readily available at the rank outside arrivals. The queue moves quickly. The tariff is set by the government: MOP 21 flag-fall covering the first 1,600 m, then MOP 2 for every 220 m, and MOP 2 for every 55 seconds of waiting if you ask the driver to wait. Boarding at the Macau International Airport taxi station adds a MOP 8 surcharge, and each item of luggage in the boot is MOP 3. Note there is no extra charge for crossing from the islands to Macao, though Macao to Coloane adds MOP 5 and Taipa to Coloane adds MOP 2. Drivers speak limited English but know all the major hotels.

Free casino hotel shuttles: If you are staying at a major resort on the Cotai Strip (Venetian, Galaxy, Parisian, Wynn Palace, Studio City) or Macau Peninsula (Grand Lisboa, Wynn), free shuttle buses run from the airport at regular intervals. This is the most popular option for hotel guests. The buses are air-conditioned coaches. No reservation needed -- just find your hotel's bus stop.

Public bus: Routes connect the airport to points across the Peninsula, Taipa and Coloane. The fare is MOP 6.00 flat, and you need coins — the buses give no change. Useful if you are budget-conscious and travelling light, but not practical with heavy luggage.

Pre-booked private transfer: A driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign. The price is fixed when you book, so you see it before you fly, and it depends on the vehicle you choose. This is the best option if your hotel does not offer a shuttle, or if you want door-to-door service without waiting.

Light Rail (LRT): The Taipa line connects the airport area to the Cotai Strip and the ferry terminal. Fares are charged by the number of stations: MOP 3 for up to 3 stations, MOP 4 for up to 6, MOP 5 for up to 9 and MOP 6 for up to 12 (Macao Light Rapid Transit, July 2026). Useful for connecting transit, but stations may not be right at your hotel.

Macau is compact, so transport costs are low compared to most international destinations. The taxi meter runs on a government tariff, so rather than guess at fares we can work them out from it:

To be clear about the extras, because guides often get this wrong: there is an airport surcharge, it is MOP 8, and it applies whenever you board at the airport rank — not only at night. Luggage in the boot is MOP 3 a piece. There is no surcharge from the islands to Macao, but Macao to Coloane adds MOP 5 and Taipa to Coloane adds MOP 2. Tariffs are revised from time to time, so treat these as current at publication.

MFM airport operates until around midnight, with the last flights arriving close to 1 AM. Taxis are available around the clock, though the queue may be shorter late at night. Casino hotel shuttles run until late but check your hotel's last bus time -- some stop by 11 PM or midnight. Public buses run reduced service after 11 PM. A pre-booked transfer is the most reliable option for late arrivals, as the driver will be there regardless of your landing time.

Macau taxis are standard sedans -- fine for two adults and one or two suitcases. Families with more than two bags or a stroller should consider a larger private transfer vehicle. Casino shuttles have luggage compartments and can handle multiple bags, but space is shared with other passengers. Child seats are not standard in Macau taxis. If you need one, a private transfer booked in advance is your only reliable option.

For pre-booked transfers, drivers wait in the arrivals hall near the exit. The airport is small enough that you will spot them easily. For taxis, exit the building and turn right to the marked taxi rank. For casino shuttles, exit and turn left toward the bus area. Signs in English clearly indicate each hotel's shuttle stop.

Choose a casino shuttle if: You are staying at a major resort and want free transport. Be prepared to wait 15-20 minutes for the next bus.

Choose a taxi if: You want to leave immediately, your destination is anywhere in Macau, and you have moderate luggage.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if: You want a driver waiting at arrivals, need a specific vehicle size, or your hotel does not run a shuttle.

Choose the public bus if: You are on a tight budget, travel with minimal bags, and have time.
