Sweden does not set taxi prices — each company sets its own, which is why Swedish taxis have a reputation for stinging the unwary. At Arlanda, what limits the damage is Swedavia's agreement with the companies allowed to pick up here, which caps the fare within a marked zone. Treat that cap as a ceiling and ask for the company's actual fixed price before you get in.
What you get with each
Taxi: You walk outside, join the rank, get in, and go. No booking needed, no waiting for a specific driver. Swedish taxis are clean, well-maintained, and professional. Ask for the fixed price up front; if the company gives you one, it must be entered and visible in the taximeter before you set off. You get a ride from the airport to your destination.
Pre-booked transfer: A driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign. Your flight is tracked so the driver adjusts for delays. You typically get 60 minutes of free waiting time. The vehicle is reserved for you, there is no queue, and the driver can help with luggage. Child seats can be arranged in advance. The price is locked when you book.
When a taxi makes more sense

Important things to know about Arlanda taxis
Sweden has a reputation for expensive taxis, and it is deserved — there is no regulated tariff, so a company can legally charge what it likes. What protects you at Arlanda is narrower than people assume: Swedavia only lets companies pick up here under an agreement that caps the fare within a marked zone, currently published as roughly SEK 800 for 1-4 passengers and SEK 1,275 for 5-8, to one address.
Two things follow. First, the cap stops at the zone boundary — for anywhere further out, nothing is protecting you but the price you agree in advance. Second, a cap is not a quote: ask what the company actually charges. Swedavia's advice is to ask whether a fixed price applies and to check it is entered and visible in the taximeter before the journey starts; the meter must run throughout in any case. The honest verdict
For most travellers going to central Stockholm, the taxi is a fine choice — the Swedavia cap puts a known ceiling on it and the companies compete below that. A pre-booked transfer is worth the extra cost when you need specific vehicle types, child seats, or the certainty of a driver waiting at arrivals. If you are splitting costs among a group, the per-person difference between a taxi and transfer is small.
