Stockholm Arlanda Airport to the city: what you actually need to know

Arlanda Airport is about 40 km north of Stockholm city centre. The Arlanda Express train is the fastest option at 20 minutes. Airport coaches, taxis, rideshares, and pre-booked transfers are also available. The distance is significant by European standards, so budget more time than you might expect.

Arlanda has four terminals. Terminals 2 and 5 handle international flights, while Terminals 3 and 4 are primarily domestic. If you are arriving from within the Schengen Area, there is no passport check. For non-Schengen flights, immigration is handled efficiently with automated e-gates for EU/EEA passports and manned booths for others. Wait times are typically 10-20 minutes but can stretch during morning peak hours when long-haul flights from Asia cluster.

Baggage claim is straightforward. Luggage trolleys are free. After collecting bags, you walk into the arrivals hall. Each terminal has its own arrivals area, but they are connected by the SkyCity walkway between Terminals 4 and 5. The Arlanda Express station is located between Terminals 2/3 (southern station) and Terminal 5 (northern station). Bus stops are outside each terminal. Taxi ranks are at the exit doors.

Flygbussarna (Airport Coaches) run to Stockholm City Terminal (next to Central Station) and take 40-50 minutes depending on traffic. A single ticket costs SEK 129 (about EUR 11). Buses run every 10-15 minutes during peak hours. This is the budget-conscious choice.

SL Commuter Train (Pendeltag) runs from Arlanda to Stockholm Central but requires an additional station access fee of SEK 130 on top of the normal SL fare. Total cost is around SEK 180-190 (about EUR 16). It takes about 40 minutes. Not much cheaper than the Arlanda Express when you add the station fee.

Taxis are available at ranks outside each terminal. A ride to central Stockholm costs SEK 500-600 (about EUR 45-55). Reputable companies like Taxi Stockholm (020 20 20 20) and Sverige Taxi display fixed prices to the city on their windows. Always check the fixed price sticker before getting in.

Uber operates at Arlanda and typically costs SEK 400-600 (about EUR 36-55) to the city centre. Prices fluctuate with demand.

Pre-booked transfers with meet-and-greet service run SEK 600-900 (about EUR 55-80) for a sedan to central Stockholm. Minivans for groups cost SEK 900-1300 (about EUR 80-115).

For destinations outside Stockholm, prices increase substantially. Uppsala is closer to Arlanda (about 35 km) and a taxi there costs around SEK 400-500 (EUR 36-45). Sodertalje or Norrkoping transfers run SEK 1500-2500 (EUR 135-225).

The Arlanda Express runs until about midnight, with the last departure around 00:05, and resumes at approximately 4:50 AM. Flygbussarna run later, with reduced overnight frequency (roughly one bus per hour between midnight and 4 AM). Taxis are always available at the ranks. Late night taxi availability is good since Arlanda is a major hub, though you may wait 5-10 minutes during quiet hours. Rideshare availability drops significantly after midnight. If you land between midnight and 5 AM, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is the most reliable option.

The Arlanda Express has generous luggage space and is comfortable with children. The ride is short enough that kids rarely get restless. Flygbussarna coaches have luggage compartments underneath. Both are manageable for families. However, if you have a stroller, car seat, and multiple large bags, the walk through the station and finding space on public transport adds stress. A taxi or pre-booked transfer is significantly easier for families with young children. Child seats are not standard in Swedish taxis but can be requested when pre-booking a transfer.

Taxis line up at clearly marked ranks outside each terminal's arrivals exit. Follow the "Taxi" signs. Pre-booked transfer drivers typically meet you in the arrivals hall holding a name sign. The meeting point is usually near the exit doors of your arrival terminal. For Terminal 5 (most international flights), drivers wait in the arrivals hall after customs. Uber and rideshare pickups are at designated spots outside the terminal. Do not accept rides from anyone approaching you inside the terminal.

Choose Flygbussarna if you want to save money and do not mind a longer ride. Good for solo travellers and couples with manageable luggage.

Choose a taxi if you want door-to-door service without pre-planning. Check the fixed-price sticker on the car window before departure.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if you have a large group, heavy luggage, children, need a child seat, or are heading somewhere outside central Stockholm. The fixed price and meet-and-greet service remove uncertainty.
