Stockholm Arlanda Airport to the city: what you actually need to know

Arlanda Airport is about 42 km from Stockholm city centre (Swedavia). The Arlanda Express is a non-stop train taking 18 minutes. Airport coaches, commuter trains, taxis and pre-booked transfers are also available. The distance is significant by European standards, so budget more time than you might expect.

Arlanda has several terminals, and the Arlanda Express serves them from two stations: Arlanda South for Terminals 2, 3 and 4, and Arlanda North for Terminal 5 (a free one-minute hop between the two on the Express). Arlanda Central Station, used by commuter and long-distance trains, is in SkyCity between Terminals 4 and 5. Vy Flygbussarna coaches stop at Terminals 4 and 5. Contracted taxis wait directly outside the arrivals hall at Terminal 5 and outside Terminal 2. Check your airline's terminal before you travel, as airlines move between terminals.

Arlanda Express is the premium train service: non-stop to Stockholm Central in 18 minutes (19 to Arlanda North), with trains every 15 minutes. The operator's published fares are SEK 340 single / SEK 640 return for an adult (26-64), SEK 160 single for youth (18-25), and SEK 210 single for pensioners (65+). Children aged 0-7 travel free, and children aged 8-17 travel free with an adult or pensioner ticket holder (alone they need a SEK 160 single). Singles and returns are valid for 90 days. Fares are revised from time to time, so check the operator before you travel.

Flygbussarna (Airport Coaches) stop at Terminals 4 and 5. Swedavia recommends buying your ticket in advance on flygbussarna.se, since paying on board is not always possible. Take the current fare and journey time from the operator's site or app rather than from a figure quoted elsewhere.

SL Commuter Train (Pendeltag) runs from Arlanda Central to Stockholm Central in 38 minutes. On top of the normal SL fare you pay a station fee at Arlanda Central, which Swedavia publishes as SEK 157. If your ticket does not include it, you pay at the ticket gates in SkyCity. Once you add it to the SL ticket, you are not saving much against the Arlanda Express.

Taxis wait outside Terminal 5 arrivals and outside Terminal 2, and are available 24 hours a day. Sweden has no regulated taxi tariff (free price setting applies), so what protects you at Arlanda is Swedavia's agreement with the companies it lets operate there, which caps the fare. Swedavia's taxi page gives the maximum within the marked zone to a single address as SEK 800 for 1-4 passengers (another passage on the same page says SEK 825) and SEK 1,275 for 5-8. That is a ceiling, not a quote. Swedavia's advice is to ask the driver what price applies and whether it is a fixed price, and if so to check that it is shown on the taximeter before you set off; the meter must be running throughout the journey either way. Taxis at Terminal 4 or SkyCity likely have no contract with Swedavia.

Pre-booked transfers fix the price when you book; meet-and-greet is included only if your booking says so. Get the quote and compare it against the taxi cap above.

Getting to Stockholm city centre:

For destinations outside the marked zone, regular taxi meter prices apply and the Swedavia cap does not. Uppsala (about 36 km) is closer to Arlanda than Stockholm (about 42 km). For anywhere beyond the zone, agree a fixed price before you set off or book a transfer, because there is no ceiling doing the work for you.

Taxis are available 24 hours a day at Terminal 2 and Terminal 5, and Swedavia recommends pre-booking a taxi if you travel from the airport at night. Swedavia also says several bus lines serve the airport around the clock. For the Arlanda Express, check the operator's current timetable for first and last departures. If you land late, a taxi or a pre-booked transfer are the alternatives; Swedavia recommends pre-booking a taxi at night.

Swedavia lists baby changing facilities in all terminals and play areas in Terminal 5, Terminal 2, the baggage claim area and SkyCity, and you can borrow a stroller after check-in in Terminals 2 and 5. If you have a stroller, car seat, and multiple large bags, the walk through the station and finding space on public transport adds stress. A taxi or pre-booked transfer avoids the station walk for families with young children. Swedavia advises asking the taxi host in advance if you need a child seat; with a pre-booked transfer you can request one when booking.

Contracted taxis wait directly outside the arrivals hall at Terminal 5 and outside Terminal 2; for a wheelchair-accessible taxi, the taxi rank officer outside each terminal will order a suitable car. If meet-and-greet is included in your booking, the driver meets you in the arrivals hall holding a name sign; your confirmation tells you the exact meeting point for your terminal.

Choose the Arlanda Express if you are travelling light, want speed, and your destination is near Stockholm Central Station. Youth, child and pensioner fares are much lower than the adult one, and children travel free with an adult ticket, so check before you write it off as expensive.

Choose Flygbussarna if you want a bus option and do not mind a longer ride; compare the current fare on the operator's site.

Choose a taxi if you want door-to-door service without pre-planning. Use a company with a Swedavia agreement, ask for the price up front, and check it is shown on the meter before you set off.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if you have a large group, heavy luggage, children, need a child seat, or are heading somewhere outside the marked zone. The price is fixed at booking; check what the booking includes.
