Getting from Malmö Airport to Malmö, Lund, and Copenhagen

Malmö Airport (MMX, still often called Sturup) is 30 km east of Malmö and 26 km southeast of Lund — not at the edge of the city as the name implies. A Flygbussarna coach runs to Malmö Central for SEK 119 (~€11) one way, taking 40-45 minutes. A taxi to Malmö is typically SEK 550-750 (~€50-70), to Lund SEK 500-700 (~€45-65). Bolt and Uber operate in the Malmö / Lund / Copenhagen region but driver supply at MMX is limited. A pre-booked transfer runs SEK 500-800 (~€45-75) for a sedan. Honest take: most Malmö and Lund travelers actually use Copenhagen Kastrup (CPH) instead — 30-40 min by Öresund train from Malmö Central, vastly better-connected, and often cheaper fares. MMX mainly handles Ryanair, Wizz Air, and charter flights.

Malmö Airport is small, quiet, and a bit sleepy outside of charter-season peaks. It sits in rural Svedala municipality surrounded by farmland — not close to anything visibly "Malmö."

After landing: Jet bridges for larger aircraft, stairs and walk across the apron for smaller ones. Schengen formalities are a light spot-check. Non-Schengen arrivals (UK, Turkey, Morocco, Egypt, some Middle Eastern and Asian charters) face slower passport control — 20-45 minutes.

Arrivals hall: Single floor, straightforward layout. Car rental counters (Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Enterprise). A café that closes when there are no incoming flights. Newsagent, toilets, and a small Flygbussarna ticket kiosk. Exit doors lead to the coach bay and taxi rank.

The reality: MMX is purpose-built to funnel Ryanair/Wizz passengers to either Malmö or Lund, plus charter groups to Nordic holiday destinations. It works — but it is plainly second-choice for most southern-Sweden travelers who would prefer CPH's train-to-your-doorstep connectivity. Expect a calm, efficient, low-frills experience.

Flygbussarna coach: The main public option. Runs between MMX and Malmö Central with a stop at Lund. SEK 119 (~€11) single to Malmö, SEK 109 (~€10) to Lund, when booked online; slightly more at the counter. Takes 40-45 min to Malmö Central, 35-40 min to Lund. Coaches coordinate with main flight arrivals. Comfortable, Wi-Fi, luggage underneath. The default choice for 90% of travelers.

Skånetrafiken local bus (line 130): A regional bus also connects MMX to Malmö / Svedala area. Cheaper (SEK 55-75, ~€5-7 with Skånetrafiken travel pass or app ticket) but longer and less flight-coordinated. Fine for Swedish locals; not usually worth the savings for tourists.

Train: There is no rail station at MMX. Southern Skåne's Öresund and Pågatåg trains do not stop at the airport. Some travelers take a bus from MMX to Svedala station, then train — total 50-80 min to Malmö. Generally not recommended over the Flygbussarna.

Taxi: Swedish deregulated taxi market. Legit operators (Taxi Skåne, Taxi 020, Taxi Kurir, Cabonline) charge around SEK 550-750 (~€50-70) to Malmö, SEK 500-700 (~€45-65) to Lund, SEK 900-1,300 (~€80-115) to Copenhagen Kastrup (CPH) — a popular cross-border run. Always check the yellow fare sticker on the rear passenger window before getting in. Avoid unknown companies quoting round SEK 1,000+ for short trips.

Uber / Bolt: Both operate across the Öresund / Skåne region. Bolt is generally better represented in Malmö than Uber. Airport pickups at MMX are legal but driver supply is limited — most drivers cluster in Malmö and Lund. Expect SEK 500-700 (~€45-65) for a Malmö trip when a car is available.

Pre-booked transfer: Sedan SEK 500-800 (~€45-75) to Malmö, SEK 450-750 (~€40-70) to Lund, SEK 1,000-1,400 (~€90-130) to Copenhagen Kastrup. Driver meets you inside arrivals with a name sign. A good choice for groups, families, late arrivals, or anyone doing the Öresund Bridge crossing to Copenhagen.

Rental car: Reasonable for exploring southern Skåne (Ystad, Österlen, Simrishamn) and if you plan to cross into Denmark. Expect SEK 350-650/day (~€32-58) off-season. The Öresund Bridge toll is around DKK 410 (~€55) for a passenger car one way — factor that in for cross-border plans.

Consider Copenhagen Kastrup (CPH) instead: For most Malmö/Lund travelers, CPH is genuinely the better gateway — far more flights, often cheaper fares, and a direct Öresundståg train from CPH airport to Malmö Central in 35 minutes for SEK 129-149 (~€12-14). If you have the flexibility, compare both options when booking.

Notes: Swedish taxis are deregulated — always check the yellow fare sticker. Öresund Bridge toll for a passenger car is around DKK 410 (~€55) each way; most pre-booked transfers to Copenhagen quote a price that already includes the toll (confirm when booking). VAT is included in quoted fares.

MMX takes Ryanair, Wizz and charter flights late, sometimes past midnight. Flygbussarna coaches are scheduled to match the main arrivals — the last coach on any given day is tied to the last flight's actual arrival time. Check the Flygbussarna app for your date.

If your flight is delayed and you miss the last coach:

• Taxis are usually present for known late flights but supply is thin. Confirm the fare before getting in and stick to major operators.
• Uber / Bolt at MMX overnight is possible but unreliable.
• Local Skånetrafiken buses stop running mid-evening.
• Pre-booked transfer is the clean option: driver tracks the flight, waits for delays, and the price is fixed.

Southern Sweden winter conditions (snow, fog, black ice) extend drive times to Malmö and especially Copenhagen. For any flight arriving after 23:00, especially November-March, pre-booking a transfer or confirming a specific taxi company is the sensible move. The roads are flat and well-maintained but an empty forested landscape at 01:00 is no place to be haggling over fares.

MMX is easy with kids: short walks, level access, uncrowded halls. The 40-45 minute Flygbussarna to Malmö is short enough that most children tolerate it.

Child seats: Swedish taxis generally do not carry child seats, and by law taxis are exempt from the child-restraint rules. For peace of mind, pre-book a transfer specifying seats, or use a rental car with seats (SEK 75-150/day ~€7-14).

Luggage: Flygbussarna handles luggage underneath — no issue with 2 bags per person. Skånetrafiken regional buses have limited luggage space. Pre-booked transfers with minivans handle 6-8 bags, strollers, and sports gear.

Charter-flight families: If you are on a package charter from Turkey, Greece, Egypt, or similar, ground handling often includes a coach transfer to your resort or hotel. Check your tour operator voucher before assuming you need to book anything separate.

Flygbussarna coach: Coach bay directly outside arrivals, 30 m from the door. Buy tickets online (QR code scan fastest) or at the kiosk inside. Coaches show "Flygbussarna" and destination (Malmö / Lund) on the windshield.

Skånetrafiken bus (line 130): Stop signposted from the terminal, slightly further than the Flygbussarna bay. Use the Skånetrafiken app to buy tickets.

Taxi: Official rank outside arrivals. Major operators (Taxi Skåne, Taxi Kurir, Cabonline, Taxi 020) queue in rotation. Check the yellow fare sticker before getting in.

Uber / Bolt (if you manage to get one): Designated pickup area per app. Legal but supply is limited.

Pre-booked transfer: Driver waits inside arrivals at the baggage-claim exit with a name sign. The simplest option and does not depend on Swedish mobile data or app luck.

Car rental: Counters in the arrivals hall; lots a short walk outside.
