Arlanda is about 40 km north of Stockholm. That distance means transport costs are higher than at many European airports, but there is a wide range depending on what you choose.
Arlanda Express: SEK 340 adult single
The fastest option — a non-stop 18 minutes to Stockholm Central. The operator's published fares are SEK 340 single and SEK 640 return for an adult (26-64). The concession fares are the interesting part: SEK 160 single for youth (18-25) and children (0-17), SEK 210 single for pensioners (65+), and children travel free with an adult or pensioner ticket holder. Singles and returns are valid for 90 days. Comfortable, with good luggage space. Fares are revised from time to time — check the operator before you travel.
Flygbussarna Coach
Airport coaches to Stockholm City Terminal take 40-50 minutes and run every 10-15 minutes during the day. Luggage goes in the compartment below. This is the cheapest of the scheduled options by a wide margin. The fare varies by how and when you buy, so take it from the operator's site or app rather than from a figure quoted elsewhere.
SL Commuter Train: SL fare + SEK 157 station fee
The pendeltag (commuter train) takes about 40 minutes, but you pay a station fee at Arlanda Central on top of the normal SL ticket. Swedavia publishes that fee as SEK 157. It has nothing to do with the airport — it covers the use of the station and the railway, and how they were financed when built. Once you add it, the commuter train is not the bargain it appears to be, and it is slower than the Arlanda Express.
Taxi: capped, not tariffed
Sweden does not regulate taxi prices — every company sets its own. What protects you at Arlanda is Swedavia's contract: to pick up at the airport a company must have an agreement with Swedavia, and the agreement caps the fare for trips within a marked zone. Swedavia publishes that cap as roughly SEK 800 for 1-4 passengers and SEK 1,275 for 5-8 passengers, to one address.
Read that as a ceiling, not a price. Contracted companies compete well below it and most will quote you a fixed price. Swedavia's own advice: ask whether the company applies a fixed price, and if it does, check that the price is entered and visible in the taximeter before the journey starts — the meter must be running throughout regardless. The ride takes 35-50 minutes; rush hour (7-9 AM, 4-6 PM) pushes it toward the upper end.
Rideshare (Uber)
Uber is dynamically priced, so the only number that matters is the quote in the app before you confirm. Surge pricing during rush hours or late nights can push it above what a contracted taxi would charge — compare the two.
Pre-booked transfer
A transfer fixes the price when you book and includes meet-and-greet, flight tracking, and a free waiting period. Get the quote and weigh it against the taxi cap.

What affects the price
Transport type is the biggest factor. The gap between the coach and a private transfer is wide.
Who is travelling matters more than people expect on the Arlanda Express. A family with children can pay dramatically less than four adult singles, because children travel free with an adult ticket.
Group size changes the maths on a taxi. Split four ways, a capped fare comes down to something close to per-person coach money, with door-to-door service.
Traffic does not affect train or bus fares but adds time (and stress) to road-based options during rush hours.
Common money traps
- Arlanda station fee: if you take the commuter train, the SEK 157 station fee is on top of the SL ticket. Many people do not discover this until the gates.
- Taxis without a Swedavia agreement: the price cap only binds contracted companies. Ask for the fixed price up front and check it goes into the meter before you move.
- Trips outside the marked zone: the cap stops at the zone boundary. For Uppsala, Sodertalje or anywhere further, settle the price in advance.
- Currency exchange: rates at the airport are poor. Use a card for everything — Sweden is nearly cashless.
The honest recommendation
For solo travellers, the Flygbussarna coach is the best value. If speed matters, take the Arlanda Express — and check the concession fares before assuming it is out of reach, especially with children. For groups of three or more, a taxi becomes cost-effective per person. Families with luggage and children benefit most from a pre-booked transfer where the price and logistics are settled in advance.
