How much it costs to get from Puerto Vallarta Airport to your hotel

PVR Airport sits along the coast between Puerto Vallarta to the south and Nuevo Vallarta to the north. How much you pay depends heavily on which direction you are heading and how far.

Pre-booked transfer prices

Private sedan and minivan transfers from PVR are priced individually by each transfer operator at the time of booking — no single published rate card covers the market, so compare quotes for your exact dates, destination, and vehicle size.

As a rule of thumb, fares rise with distance from the airport. Prices are per vehicle, not per person, and typically include meet-and-greet and luggage handling with a fixed rate once confirmed.

Authorized airport taxi prices

PVR uses a zone-based taxi system. You buy a ticket at the transportation booth before getting in the taxi, and the fare is fixed per vehicle for your destination zone. No airport authority publishes these zone rates online, so ask the attendant at the booth for the current fare to your destination — fares are revised periodically and generally rise the farther you are travelling (downtown and the Hotel Zone are the cheapest zones; Sayulita and Punta de Mita, being farthest, are the most expensive). The booth accepts cash (pesos or dollars) and sometimes credit cards.

Public bus

Local buses run along the highway past the airport and head into downtown Puerto Vallarta. This is the cheapest option, priced per person — confirm the current fare when boarding. The catch: you need to walk out of the airport, cross an overpass, and wait at the highway bus stop. Buses are basic, have no luggage storage, and stop frequently. Only realistic for backpackers with a small bag.

What affects the price

Direction matters more than distance. Heading south to downtown PV is cheap and close. Heading north to Sayulita or Punta de Mita crosses into Nayarit state and prices jump significantly.

Vehicle type scales the price. A Suburban (large SUV) taxi costs more than a standard sedan, and minivan transfers cost more than sedan transfers.

Group size changes the per-person math. Splitting an authorized taxi's fixed per-vehicle fare among a full group of passengers is usually good value compared to paying for individual seats.

Time of day does not significantly affect authorized taxi prices. Transfer prices are fixed once booked. Late-night bus service is unavailable.

Common money traps

• Unlicensed taxi drivers approach you in the arrivals area offering rides. Their prices are often higher than the official booth rates, and the vehicles are unregulated. Always use the booth.
• Dollar vs peso confusion: Some drivers quote in dollars, some in pesos. Confirm which currency is being quoted and, if paying in the other currency, ask what exchange rate is being applied.
• Included resort transfers: Many all-inclusive packages at Nuevo Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit resorts include airport transfers. Double-check before paying for one separately.
• Return trip pricing: Getting back to the airport from your hotel is usually cheaper than the airport taxi rate. Street taxis and Uber (which works in town, just not for airport pickups) offer lower prices for the return journey.

The honest recommendation

For downtown PV or the Hotel Zone, an authorized airport taxi is fine — prices are reasonable and the ride is short. For Nuevo Vallarta and beyond, compare a pre-booked transfer quote against the taxi booth rate before deciding — a transfer often works out comparable or cheaper for the longer runs and gives you a confirmed vehicle waiting. For Sayulita or Punta de Mita, definitely get a transfer quote in advance — the taxi zone rates for those distances are the steepest on the airport's fare list.
