Miguel Hidalgo Airport (GDL) to Guadalajara — What You Actually Need to Know

Miguel Hidalgo International Airport sits 17 km south of Guadalajara's centro historico and about 20 km from Zapopan. An official airport taxi costs MXN 350-500 (~EUR 18-26) to the centre. Uber works at GDL and typically costs MXN 200-350 (~EUR 10-18). A pre-booked private transfer runs EUR 20-40 with meet-and-greet. There is a bus for MXN 10-15 (~EUR 0.50-0.80) but it requires a connection. Guadalajara is a large, sprawling city with serious traffic, so your arrival time matters more than the distance.

GDL has two terminals — Terminal 1 handles most domestic flights and some international, while Terminal 2 (newer) handles most international flights and Volaris domestic. A free shuttle bus connects them every 10-15 minutes.

After clearing immigration and customs at Terminal 2 (international arrivals), you exit into a busy arrivals hall with ATMs, currency exchange counters, and transport desks. The atmosphere is noisy during peak hours with taxi solicitors competing for attention.

Do not accept rides from people approaching you inside the terminal. Use only the official taxi counters or your pre-arranged transport.

Traffic warning: During morning rush (07:00-10:00) and evening rush (17:00-21:00), the 17 km drive can take 50-75 minutes. Off-peak, it is closer to 25-35 minutes. No vehicle escapes Guadalajara traffic.

Uber and DiDi save 30-40% over airport taxis but require going upstairs to the departure level for pickup. The official taxi uses a pre-paid voucher system — buy at the counter inside, no negotiation needed.

Airport taxi fares are fixed by zone. Uber fluctuates with surge pricing during rush hours. Pre-booked transfers are fixed at booking with no surprises.

GDL receives flights until after midnight, including connections from US cities. The airport operates 24 hours but gets very quiet between 01:00 and 05:00.

Official airport taxis are available around the clock with the same fixed zone prices — no night surcharge. Uber and DiDi work at night but with longer wait times of 10-15 minutes after midnight.

The upside of late-night arrivals is virtually no traffic — the drive to centro takes just 20-25 minutes. Stick to official taxis, Uber, or a pre-booked transfer. Avoid unlicensed vehicles.

Both terminals have elevators, ramps, and trolleys. The arrivals area can feel crowded during peak afternoon hours.

Child seats are not provided by airport taxis or Uber in Mexico. This is standard across the country. Bring your own, book a private transfer with a child seat, or rent one from the car rental desk (about MXN 50-100/day).

Uber / DiDi: Pickup is on the departure level (upstairs), not arrivals. Take the elevator or escalator up one floor. Follow signs for "Salidas" or ask staff.
