Maputo International Airport (MPM) Transfer Guide

Maputo International Airport is about 7 km northwest of the city center, a 15-25 minute drive in normal traffic. A pre-booked private transfer is fixed-price, agreed when you book. Taxis at the airport are not metered — there is no official municipal tariff to check, so every fare is negotiated on the spot, and price depends on your negotiation as much as the route. There is no reliable public bus service from the airport. For most travelers arriving in Maputo, a pre-booked transfer or an airport taxi are the only practical options. This is not a city with abundant transport infrastructure, and having something arranged in advance makes a significant difference.

Maputo International Airport received a new terminal in recent years, and the facilities are much improved from what older guides describe. Immigration can still be slow, especially when multiple flights arrive together. Have your visa documentation ready. Many nationalities need a visa, and arrival processing has become inconsistent — Mozambique's official eVisa portal (evisa.gov.mz) sets the current visa/eTA fees and requirements for your nationality, so check it and apply in advance rather than assuming a fixed amount or counting on visa-on-arrival.

Baggage claim is in the same hall. Bags can take 20-40 minutes to appear. Once you clear customs, you exit into the arrivals area where taxi drivers and transfer company representatives wait. The terminal has ATMs and currency exchange, but rates are better in the city. The local currency is the Mozambican metical (MZN), though US dollars are accepted by many transfer services.

Pre-booked private transfer: A driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign. Fixed price agreed when you book, quoted in dollars or meticais and varying by operator and vehicle type. This is the smoothest option, especially for first-time visitors to Mozambique.

Airport taxi: Taxis wait outside arrivals. There is no municipal meter tariff in Maputo, so every fare is negotiated before you get in — there's no official rate to check against, and the driver's opening ask is normally well above what a fair price ends up being. Agree on the price and the currency clearly before departure. Taxis are generally safe.

Chapas (minibuses): Local minibuses operate on various routes through the city, very cheap but do not serve the airport directly. You would need to walk to a main road to flag one down, which is not practical with luggage. Not recommended for airport transfers.

Rental car: Available from a few agencies at the airport. Driving in Maputo requires confidence, as road conditions and driving habits are different from what most international visitors are used to. Not recommended for first-time visitors.

Hotel pickup: Some hotels, particularly the larger international ones, offer airport pickup for guests, complimentary or charged. Ask when booking your room.

There is no official taxi tariff or published transfer rate card for Maputo, so no fixed numbers are given here — prices vary by operator, vehicle, and negotiation. What's consistent:

• City center / Baixa, Polana / Sommerschield: the shortest, most common runs — get a fixed quote from a transfer operator, or negotiate the taxi fare before departure
• Costa do Sol, Matola: similar short runs a little further out
• Tofo Beach (Inhambane): about 6-7 hours' drive, effectively a long-distance charter — always agree a fixed price in advance for a trip this long
• South Africa border (Ressano Garcia): about 2-3 hours' drive

Prices can be quoted in US dollars, South African rand, or Mozambican meticais. Confirm the currency when negotiating or booking. Private transfer prices are fixed at booking. Taxi prices are always negotiable and a driver's starting ask well above the eventual price is normal.

Several international flights arrive in Maputo in the evening or at night. After dark, taxi availability at the airport decreases and drivers have more negotiating leverage, since there is no fixed tariff to hold them to. The roads between the airport and city center are generally safe but poorly lit in sections. A pre-booked transfer is strongly recommended for any arrival after 8 PM. The driver knows you are coming, the price is set in advance, and you are not negotiating in the dark with someone you do not know.

The airport terminal is manageable and distances inside are short. For families, the main consideration is vehicle size. Standard taxis at the airport are often older sedans that may not have functioning seat belts in the back, let alone car seats. If you are traveling with young children, a pre-booked transfer in a newer vehicle is the safer choice. Request a car seat in advance, though availability is not guaranteed in Mozambique. Bringing your own is the surest option.

Luggage handling is straightforward. Porters may offer to help with bags, and a small tip of 50-100 MZN is appropriate.

Pre-booked transfer drivers wait in the arrivals hall or just outside the exit doors with a name sign. You will typically receive a phone number via WhatsApp or SMS to contact the driver when you have your bags.

Taxis are found outside the arrivals exit. There is usually a group of drivers near the terminal. Approach them rather than accepting offers from people inside the terminal building.

If your hotel is sending a driver, they will either be inside arrivals with a sign or waiting in a marked hotel vehicle outside.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if: this is your first time in Mozambique, you are arriving at night, you have heavy luggage, you are with family, or you prefer not to negotiate prices at the curb.

Choose an airport taxi if: you are an experienced Africa traveler, comfortable negotiating in Portuguese or English, traveling light, and arriving during daylight hours.

Choose a hotel pickup if: your hotel offers it and the price is reasonable. It combines the convenience of a pre-booked transfer with the hotel's accountability.

Avoid chapas and walking from the airport. The distance to the city center and the road conditions make these impractical for travelers with luggage.
