Princess Juliana Airport: Getting to Your Hotel on St. Maarten

Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) sits on the Dutch side of the island, near Simpson Bay. The island is small — most hotels on the Dutch side are 10-20 minutes away, and even the French side (Saint-Martin) resorts are reachable within 30-40 minutes. There is no public bus service from the airport. Your options are taxis with government-set rates, pre-booked transfers, or rental cars. The airport itself is compact and straightforward, though it can feel crowded when multiple flights arrive together.

SXM receives direct flights from the US, Canada, Europe, and Caribbean islands. Immigration can be slow, particularly when several US flights land within the same hour. Budget 20-45 minutes for the queue. Have your entry form ready — some airlines distribute these on the flight, or you may need to fill one out on arrival.

Baggage claim is in a single hall on the ground level. It is small and gets congested. Luggage generally appears within 15-25 minutes. Once through customs, you exit into a modest arrivals area with car rental counters and a few vendor desks.

The taxi stand is immediately outside. The heat and humidity will hit you the moment you step outside — this is the Caribbean, and the airport is not heavily air-conditioned in the outdoor areas.

Pre-booked private transfer: A driver meets you at arrivals and takes you directly to your resort or villa. The vehicle is for your group only. Prices are comparable to or slightly above the private taxi rate, but you avoid waiting for a shared taxi to fill up. Particularly useful for villas in remote locations or the French side.

Rental cars: Several agencies operate at the airport. Driving is on the right side. Roads are generally decent but narrow in places, and the border crossing between Dutch and French sides is unmarked and seamless. If you plan to explore the island, a car gives you freedom. Parking at most resorts is free.

Public buses: There is no direct bus from the airport. Local minibuses run along main roads but do not serve the airport terminal. This is not a practical option for arriving travelers with luggage.

Hotel shuttles: Some larger resorts offer airport shuttle services. Check with your hotel before arrival — this can save you money but may involve waiting for other guests on the same flight.

Nighttime surcharges of 25-50% above the standard rate are common between roughly 10 PM and midnight, and even higher after midnight.

The airport closes after the last flights and does not function as an overnight waiting area. If you arrive late, having transport arranged in advance avoids the possibility of a long wait at the taxi stand with dwindling driver availability.

Driving on the island at night is fine — the roads are generally safe, though poorly lit in some areas. The French side tends to be darker on rural stretches.

Most families visiting St. Maarten bring beach gear, snorkeling equipment, and extra bags. Taxis are typically minivans, so luggage space is not usually an issue. However, if you are in a shared taxi, space gets tight with multiple families.

Child car seat requirements in St. Maarten are not strictly enforced, and taxis do not carry them. If you need one, arrange it through a pre-booked transfer service or rent one with your rental car. Some rental agencies include them for free or a small daily fee.

The airport has luggage carts available. The distance from baggage claim to the taxi stand is short — under a minute walk.

Taxis line up directly outside the arrivals exit. The dispatcher will ask your destination and direct you to the next available vehicle. For shared taxis, you may wait until the van has enough passengers heading in the same general direction.

Pre-booked transfer drivers typically wait outside the arrivals exit holding a sign with your name. The area is small enough that you will find each other quickly. Some drivers wait in the small parking lot just across from the exit.

Rental car counters are inside the arrivals hall. Some agencies have their lots adjacent to the airport; others require a short shuttle ride.

Take a private taxi if: You want to go directly to your accommodation without stops. The fixed rates make this transparent.

Book a transfer if: You are heading to a villa or remote location, you are arriving late, or you want someone waiting for you with no uncertainty. Also practical for large groups where a single vehicle booking is simpler than negotiating a taxi.
