Several international flights arrive in Maputo in the late evening, including connections from Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, and Nairobi. If your flight lands after 9 PM, here is what you are dealing with.
What Changes at Night
Maputo Airport itself stays open for arriving flights, but the building empties quickly after the last arrivals. Shops and food outlets close. The ATMs remain accessible, which is useful if you need meticais.
Outside, the taxi situation becomes less predictable. During the day, there are usually several taxis waiting. After 10 PM, there might be a few, or there might be none. The drivers who are around know that options are limited, so negotiating a fair price becomes harder. Late-night taxi fares to the city center often run 2,500-4,000 MZN rather than the daytime 1,500-2,500 MZN.
Bolt availability drops significantly at night. You may open the app and find no drivers nearby.
The Road at Night
The road from Maputo Airport to the city center is functional but not well-lit in all sections. It is a straight, short drive and generally safe, but visibility is limited. There is less traffic at night, so the drive is actually faster, typically 10-15 minutes.
Your Best Option
A pre-booked private transfer is the clear recommendation for late-night arrivals. The driver is confirmed, the price is set, and you are not standing outside a dimly lit airport at 11 PM trying to negotiate in Portuguese. The driver monitors your flight and adjusts for delays. The cost is the same as a daytime transfer, typically $25-45 to the city center.
If You Have Not Pre-Booked
If you arrive late without a transfer arranged, check if your hotel offers emergency pickup. Many of the better hotels in Maputo will send a driver if you call from the airport, even without advance arrangement. The front desk numbers for major hotels should be saved in your phone before you travel.
Failing that, ask airport staff or security for help finding a taxi. They can sometimes call a trusted driver. Avoid accepting rides from random people in the parking area.
Hotels Near the Airport
If all else fails, there are a few hotels and guesthouses within a short distance of the airport. This is a last-resort option but better than being stranded. The city center hotels are only 15 minutes away, so staying near the airport is rarely necessary if transport is arranged.
The Practical Rule
For any arrival at Maputo after 8 PM, book your transfer in advance. The cost is modest, the peace of mind is significant, and the alternatives become genuinely uncertain after dark. This is one of those cities where advance planning pays for itself.
