Nadi Airport Transfers: What You Actually Need to Know

Nadi International Airport (NAN) is Fiji's main gateway, located about 9 km from Nadi town and roughly 200 km from the capital Suva. Most visitors are heading to Denarau Island resorts (about 20 minutes away), Nadi town, or the Coral Coast (1-2 hours south). There is no rail service and no regular public bus from the airport. Your realistic options are a pre-booked resort transfer, a taxi, or a private car service. For resort stays, check what your hotel offers before booking anything else — many include airport transfers.

NAN has a single international terminal. After a long-haul flight — most come from Australia, New Zealand, or the US West Coast — you clear biosecurity first. Fiji takes agricultural biosecurity seriously, so declare any food items honestly. Immigration follows, and processing times vary from 15 to 45 minutes depending on how many flights have landed close together.

Baggage claim is in a covered open-air area typical of Pacific Island airports. The atmosphere is relaxed. After collecting bags, you pass through customs and emerge into the arrivals area where drivers, hotel representatives, and a crowd of greeters wait.

The arrivals hall has a few currency exchange windows, ATMs, a Vodafone booth for SIM cards, and a couple of small shops. The Vodafone SIM is worth getting — data coverage is decent in the main tourist areas and you will need it for maps and communication.

Pre-booked private transfer: If your resort does not include transport, or if you are staying at an Airbnb or smaller property, a private transfer is the most reliable choice. Prices are fixed at booking. Drivers know the roads and are accustomed to managing luggage and surf boards.

Taxis: Licensed taxis queue outside arrivals. They are metered, and drivers are generally fair. The ride to Nadi town costs about 15-25 FJD ($7-12 USD), and to Denarau Island about 35-50 FJD ($16-23 USD). Taxis are fine for Nadi town and Denarau, but for longer trips to the Coral Coast or Suva, a pre-booked transfer is more practical.

Shared shuttles: Some operators run shared shuttle services to Denarau Island and popular resort areas. These are cheaper but involve waiting for other passengers and making multiple stops.

Rental cars: Available at the airport from Budget, Hertz, and local companies. Fiji drives on the left. Roads between Nadi and Suva (Kings Road or Queens Road) are manageable but not fast. Renting makes sense if you plan to explore independently.

Public buses: Local buses run along Queens Road but do not stop at the airport. You would need to walk to the main road, which is not practical with luggage after an international flight.

Many international flights land at NAN in the late evening or early morning hours due to time zone connections. The airport is accustomed to this. Taxi ranks are manned for incoming international flights regardless of the hour, and resort transfer desks stay open to meet scheduled arrivals.

That said, the area around the airport is dark and quiet after about 9 PM. If you have not arranged transport, taxis are your only realistic option — there are no ride-hailing apps operating in Fiji, and buses do not run at night.

Pre-booking is recommended for late arrivals, especially if you are heading beyond Nadi town. The drive to the Coral Coast at midnight on unfamiliar roads is not something you want to arrange on the spot.

Fiji is a popular family destination, and the airport transfer infrastructure reflects this. Resort shuttles and private transfers routinely handle families with multiple bags, strollers, and beach equipment.

Child seats are not standard in Fijian taxis. If you need one, request it when booking a private transfer and confirm availability. Some international transfer providers can source them, but local taxis will not have them.
