Milan taxi fares explained
There is a widespread belief that Linate has a flat taxi fare into central Milan. It does not. The Comune di Milano publishes fixed fares for a short list of named routes, and from Linate the list is just two entries:
- Linate – Fiera Milano (Rho): EUR 68
- Linate – Malpensa airport: EUR 128
Everything else, the city centre included, runs on the meter:
- EUR 4.10 to start on weekdays, 6 AM to 9 PM
- EUR 6.60 to start on Sundays and public holidays, 6 AM to 9 PM
- EUR 7.90 to start at night, 9 PM to 6 AM
- EUR 1.32 per km, rising to EUR 1.98 per km once the meter passes EUR 17.35
- EUR 34.48 per hour of waiting time
- EUR 16.00 minimum fare on any trip leaving Linate
Those are the Comune di Milano's published rates as of July 2024 and they are revised periodically — check the current tariffario before you travel. Milan's tariff also states plainly that you pay only what the meter shows, apart from motorway tolls, so a per-bag luggage supplement is not something you owe.
Over the roughly 8 km to the Duomo the meter usually lands around EUR 16–25 on a weekday. Taxis from Linate are still good value — the issue is availability, since at peak hours the queue can take 15–20 minutes.
When the metro is the best deal
At EUR 2.20, the Metro M4 is hard to beat on price. A single ticket covers your entire journey including transfers to other metro lines within 90 minutes. If you are going to Duomo or San Babila, it is also the fastest option — about 12 minutes.
The only downsides: it does not run after midnight, and it is not ideal with heavy luggage during rush hour.
When a transfer makes financial sense
A pre-booked transfer costs more than a taxi, but the value shows up when you factor in convenience. No queue, the driver waits for you, and prices are fixed. For groups of 3–4, a transfer at EUR 35–55 split between passengers is very reasonable.
