The S-Bahn — best value in European airports
The S1 train runs every 10 minutes from a station built directly into the airport terminal. A single ticket (Einzelticket, Hamburg AB) costs EUR 4.10 — EUR 3.81 in the hvv app — and gets you to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof in 25 minutes. From there, you can connect to the U-Bahn, buses, or regional trains to reach any part of the city.
If you plan to explore Hamburg by public transport, buy a day ticket for EUR 8.20. It covers the airport S-Bahn plus unlimited travel on all hvv transport for the rest of the day. A group day ticket for up to five people is EUR 16.40. (hvv tariff, valid from 1 January 2026.)

Taxis
Hamburg taxis are metered on the city tariff — EUR 4.50 to start, then EUR 2.70 per km for the first 9 km and EUR 2.00 per km beyond that (Hamburg taxi tariff, in force since February 2025). The meter alone therefore reaches EUR 28.80 at 9 km before any waiting time, which is roughly the distance to the Hauptbahnhof.
Rather than quote a fare per neighbourhood, it is more useful to know the official fixed fares, which you can ask for before setting off:

There is no separate airport pickup surcharge and no extra charge for standard luggage. Since February 2025 the tariff has been a single rate around the clock — there is no night surcharge. A vehicle carrying more than four passengers costs EUR 8.00 extra. Tariffs are revised periodically, so check the current one before you travel.
Private transfers
Transfer prices are set by the operator and quoted when you book, so compare the quote against the metered estimate above. A transfer usually costs more than a taxi but includes a fixed price, meet-and-greet in arrivals, flight monitoring, and the option to add child seats. Minivans for groups of 6-8 are bookable the same way.
Bottom line
The S-Bahn at EUR 4.10 is the obvious choice for most travellers. It is fast, frequent, and directly connected to the terminal. Taxis make sense for heavy luggage or destinations far from S-Bahn stops. Private transfers are for those who want guaranteed, comfortable door-to-door service.
