Hamburg Airport with Family and Kids

Last updated: March 2026

Hamburg Airport is family-friendly by design. It is compact, well-organised, and the direct S-Bahn connection means you do not need to navigate shuttle buses or long walks to reach transport. The main consideration for families is whether to take the train or opt for a car.

Inside the terminal

Both terminals have baby-changing facilities, family restrooms, and a decent selection of food options. There is a REWE To Go for snacks and essentials. Free Wi-Fi keeps everyone connected. The terminal is largely step-free with elevators to all levels including the S-Bahn platform. Stroller access is good throughout.

Getting to the city with kids

| Option | Family rating | Price (EUR) | |--------|--------------|-------------| | Private transfer with child seat | Best | 40-60 | | Taxi | Good (no child seat) | 25-35 | | S-Bahn S1 | Fine for older kids | 3.70/person |

The S-Bahn with kids

The S-Bahn works surprisingly well for families. Elevators connect the terminal to the platform, trains have open areas for strollers and luggage, and the 25-minute ride is short enough that children do not get restless. Children under 6 travel free on Hamburg public transport.

The S-Bahn gets crowded during rush hours (07:30-09:00 and 17:00-18:30). If travelling with a stroller at these times, it can feel cramped. Off-peak, there is plenty of space.

Child seat situation

German law requires child restraints for children under 12 or shorter than 150 cm. Taxis are not exempt — but airport taxi ranks rarely have seats available. Your options:

  • Book a private transfer with a child seat requested at booking time
  • Call a Hamburg taxi company in advance and request a seat (Hansa-Taxi: 040-211211)
  • Bring your own travel seat from the flight
The safest bet is a pre-booked transfer where you specify the child's age and weight.

Strollers and luggage

The S-Bahn handles strollers well outside rush hours. Taxis and transfers are obviously easier — the driver loads everything while you get the kids settled. If you have a stroller, two large suitcases, and carry-ons, a taxi at EUR 25-35 is good value for the convenience.

Tips for families

  • Children under 6 ride free on all Hamburg public transport
  • The S-Bahn platform has elevators — no need to carry strollers up stairs
  • If you arrive during rush hour, consider waiting 20 minutes for the crowd to thin
  • Pre-book transfers with child seats at least 24 hours ahead
  • REWE To Go at the airport stocks basic child essentials
