Traveling Through Victoria Falls Airport with Kids

Victoria Falls is increasingly popular with families, and the airport handles the safari-and-suitcases crowd well. The terminal is small and low-stress, which helps when you are wrangling children after a flight.

At the Airport

Immigration can take 20-40 minutes when a full plane arrives. If you are getting a visa on arrival, have your USD cash ready (30 USD single-entry per adult, children under 5 are usually free — check current Zimbabwe immigration rules for your nationality). Having the paperwork sorted in advance keeps the queue moving.

Baggage claim is a single belt in a small hall. There are basic toilet facilities. The arrivals area has an ATM and a currency exchange counter, but neither is guaranteed to be fully operational. Bring enough USD cash for your first day.

There is no dedicated family room, changing area, or play space. The terminal is functional rather than comfortable.

Getting a Child Seat

This is the main challenge. Informal taxis at Victoria Falls Airport do not carry child seats — this is standard across the region. If your child requires a car seat or booster seat, you have two options: bring your own (travel car seats are available and worth the investment for Africa trips), or book a private transfer with child seat requested in advance.

Not all transfer providers have child seats available, so confirm this specifically when booking. Do not assume it will be there — get written confirmation.

The Drive to Town

The road from VFA to Victoria Falls town is paved, relatively straight, and takes 20-25 minutes. It passes through bush landscape, and it is not unusual to see animals near the road — warthogs, baboons, and occasionally elephants. This is exciting for kids but also why safe driving matters, especially at dusk.

If your lodge is along the Zambezi or further from town, the drive may take 30-40 minutes. The roads to some of the more remote lodges are unpaved for the last stretch.

Lodge Pickups — Check First

Many family-friendly lodges in the Victoria Falls area include airport transfers. Some send dedicated family vehicles or can arrange child seats if you request in advance. Before you book separate transport, check with your accommodation — this may already be covered.

Luggage and Safari Gear

Families heading on safari often travel with more gear than usual — binoculars, camera bags, extra layers for game drives, plus the standard holiday luggage. Standard sedan transfers handle this fine for a family of three. For a family of four or more, request a larger vehicle or minivan to avoid the luggage Tetris.

If you are connecting to a light aircraft for a safari camp after reaching town, note that many small planes have strict baggage limits (typically 15-20 kg in a soft bag). Plan your packing accordingly.

Practical Advice

  • Bring water and snacks for the drive. There are no shops between the airport and town.
  • Sunscreen and hats should be accessible, not buried in your checked luggage. The UV in this part of Africa is intense.
  • If crossing to Zambia, bring passport photos and cash for each family member's visa.
  • Book transport in advance. Standing outside a remote African airport with tired children and no confirmed ride is not a situation you want to be in.
