Getting from Tirana Airport to the city without the runaround

Tirana International Airport (Nene Tereza) is about 17 km northwest of the city center. The drive takes 20-40 minutes depending on traffic, which can be heavy on the main road into town. Your main options are the Rinas Express bus, a taxi, or a pre-booked transfer. There is no rail connection. Budget around 2,500-3,500 ALL ($25-35 USD) for a taxi, or 400 ALL ($4) for the bus. The airport is a single-terminal operation, compact and easy to navigate.

The terminal is modern, renovated in recent years, and handles its traffic flow well. Immigration is usually fast for EU and visa-free nationals. Baggage claim has a few carousels in a relatively small area.

Once you exit through the arrivals doors, you enter a hall with a few shops, ATMs, and car rental desks. The exit to ground transport is clearly signed. Outside, you will find the taxi area immediately to your left and the bus stop a short walk further along. The terminal has free Wi-Fi, which is helpful for arranging a ride-hailing car.

Taxis: The official taxi rank is outside arrivals. Taxis should use meters but many will try to agree on a fixed price. The regulated fare to the city center is around 2,500 ALL ($25 USD), but drivers may ask for more during peak times or at night. Always agree on the price before you get in.

Ride-hailing apps: Several apps operate in Tirana. Coverage at the airport can be inconsistent, and wait times vary. Worth trying if you have mobile data, but not guaranteed.

Pre-booked transfer: A driver meets you inside arrivals with a name sign. Fixed price, no negotiation. Particularly useful given the inconsistency of other options at Tirana Airport.

Rental cars: Available at the terminal. Albanian driving culture is assertive, and road conditions outside Tirana can vary significantly. Not recommended for your first hours in the country unless you are experienced.

Transport to central Tirana (Skanderbeg Square, Blloku area):

• Rinas Express Bus: 400 ALL ($4 USD)
• Taxi (negotiated): 2,500-3,500 ALL ($25-35 USD)
• Pre-booked transfer: $20-35 USD for a sedan, $30-50 for a larger vehicle

Flights from London, Rome, and other European cities often arrive late in the evening. The bus does not run past about 19:00-20:00 (schedules shift seasonally). At night, your realistic options are a taxi from the rank or a pre-booked transfer.

Late-night taxis at Tirana Airport tend to charge more, and there are fewer of them. Having a transfer arranged in advance removes the uncertainty entirely. The airport terminal has limited facilities for waiting overnight, so staying until morning is not practical.

The terminal is flat and manageable with strollers and luggage. Trolleys are available. The distance from arrivals to the taxi rank is short.

Child car seats are not standard in Albanian taxis. If you need one, you must arrange it in advance through a transfer service or bring your own. A standard sedan may be tight for a family of four with full luggage. Consider booking a larger vehicle if your group or baggage is substantial.

Pre-booked transfer drivers wait in the arrivals hall, usually near the exit doors with a name sign. The hall is small enough that you will spot them easily. If you do not see your driver immediately, check just outside the terminal exit. Some transfer services include a phone number in your confirmation so you can call directly.

For taxis, walk straight out of the terminal and look for the marked taxi area to your left.

Choose a taxi if: You want immediate departure, have cash, and are comfortable agreeing on a price at the curb.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if: You arrive at night, travel with family or heavy luggage, want a fixed price, or prefer to avoid negotiation after a flight.
