TNG - Tangier

How Much Does a Transfer from Tangier Airport to the City Cost?

Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport is 12 km from the city center, and transfers are affordable by European standards. But the pricing is not always transparent, so knowing what to expect before you land helps.

The currency situation

Morocco uses the Dirham (MAD). You cannot buy Dirham outside Morocco, so most visitors exchange money at the airport upon arrival. The exchange counter in arrivals offers decent rates, and there is an ATM. For reference, 1 EUR is roughly 10.5 to 11 MAD in 2026.

Grand taxi to the city center

The standard fare for a private grand taxi from the airport to central Tangier (medina, city center, Malabata area) is 150 to 200 MAD (roughly 14 to 19 EUR). This is the price you should aim for when negotiating.

Drivers often start by quoting 250 to 300 MAD to tourists. This is not a scam per se, it is the standard negotiation dynamic in Morocco. If you know the going rate, you can politely counter and usually settle quickly. Having the right amount in cash ready speeds up the process.

Pre-booked private transfer

A sedan transfer to central Tangier costs 20 to 35 EUR, paid online at booking. No negotiation, no cash needed on arrival. The driver meets you inside the terminal. For the roughly 5 to 15 EUR premium over a taxi, you get certainty and a smoother arrival.

Destinations beyond the city center

Tangier port (city ferry): 150 to 200 MAD by taxi, 20 to 30 EUR by transfer. About 14 km, 25 minutes.

Cap Spartel / Caves of Hercules: 200 to 250 MAD by taxi, 25 to 40 EUR by transfer. About 20 km west.

Asilah: 400 to 500 MAD by taxi, 40 to 60 EUR by transfer. About 45 km south along the coast, 40 to 50 minutes.

Chefchaouen: 800 to 1200 MAD by taxi, 80 to 120 EUR by transfer. About 110 km, 2 to 2.5 hours through the Rif Mountains.

Tetouan: 300 to 400 MAD by taxi, 35 to 50 EUR by transfer. About 60 km east, roughly 1 hour.

Shared vs private grand taxi

Grand taxis can operate as shared vehicles, picking up multiple passengers going in the same direction. Shared rides are cheaper (you pay per seat, roughly 30-40 MAD to the city) but you wait until the car fills up, which can take 20 minutes or more. At the airport, most visitors opt for a private taxi, paying the full vehicle rate.

Tips to get a fair price

Ask the exchange counter staff or airport police what the current taxi rate to the city center is. This gives you a reference point and drivers know you have checked. Have smaller bills ready. Paying with a 200 MAD note for a 150 MAD ride avoids the common reply of having no change. If a driver quotes significantly above 200 MAD for the city center, simply say no thank you and try the next one. There are always more taxis.
