The shuttle is genuinely good value
At 2.60 €, the airport shuttle is one of the cheapest airport connections in France. The buses are modern, air-conditioned, and timed to flights. From Place de l'Europe, you connect to the tram (1.60 €) which covers the entire city.
The total cost of under 4.20 € to reach the city center is remarkably cheap. For solo travelers and couples without heavy luggage, this is the obvious choice during operating hours.
When the taxi makes more sense
For groups: A 28 € taxi split 3 ways (9.30 € each) is barely more than the shuttle + tram combo, with door-to-door convenience.
With luggage: Managing bags on a bus + tram connection isn't fun. The taxi goes straight to your hotel.
Night arrivals: After the last shuttle (~11 PM), taxi or transfer is your only option.
French taxi pricing explained
Montpellier taxis have three tariff levels:
- Tariff A (day, weekday): Lowest rate
- Tariff B (evening/night, 7 PM-7 AM): About 15-20% more
- Tariff C (Sunday/holidays): About 15-20% more
Hidden costs
- Shuttle + tram requires 2 tickets — they're not included in one fare
- Taxi luggage: No extra charge for luggage in the trunk
- Taxi from the rank vs called: Taxis at the airport rank may charge a small airport pickup supplement (1-2 €)
- Tipping: Not expected in French taxis. Rounding up is polite but optional.
