KWI - Kuwait City

How much does it cost to get from Kuwait Airport to the city?

Last updated: April 2026

Kuwait International Airport is about 16 km from the city centre. The short distance keeps transport costs low, but the lack of rail means you are always paying for a car.

What affects the price

Traffic in Kuwait is the main variable. During morning and evening rush hours, the 16 km journey can take 30-40 minutes instead of 15, and metered taxi fares rise accordingly. Ride-hailing apps may apply surge pricing during peak demand.

The Kuwaiti Dinar is an exceptionally strong currency. One KWD equals roughly EUR 3. Prices that look small in KWD are already reasonable in international terms.

Tips for saving money

Ride-hailing apps (Careem and Uber) are consistently the cheapest option. Download them before you travel and ensure you have mobile data or connect to airport Wi-Fi. The public bus exists but runs infrequently and is not practical with luggage.

If you are in a group of 3-4, a pre-booked sedan transfer becomes competitive per person compared to individual rides, and you get the convenience of a driver waiting inside the terminal.

Currency note

KWD is the world's highest-value currency unit. ATMs in the arrivals hall dispense KWD in small denominations. Most taxis are cash only, so withdraw KWD 10-20 before heading to the taxi rank. Pre-booked transfers and ride-hailing apps accept credit cards.
