Kuwait Airport to the city: what you actually need to know

Kuwait International Airport (KWI) is about 16 km south of Kuwait City centre. There is no metro or rail connection. Your options are taxis, pre-booked transfers, rental cars, or hotel shuttles. A taxi to the city centre takes 15-25 minutes and costs around KWD 5-8 (EUR 15-24). The airport is straightforward and not overwhelming, but the lack of public transport means you will need a vehicle of some kind.

Kuwait Airport has been undergoing major expansion. The new Terminal 2 (designed by Foster + Partners) handles some airlines while the older terminals serve the rest. Whichever terminal you arrive at, the process is similar.

Immigration can be slow. Kuwait requires visas for most nationalities, and visa-on-arrival processing adds time. Even with an e-visa, queues can build during peak hours when several Gulf and Asian flights arrive together. Allow 20-45 minutes for immigration.

Baggage claim is standard. Trolleys are free. The arrivals hall has currency exchange booths, SIM card vendors, and a few shops. ATMs are available. The airport is air-conditioned, which matters because stepping outside in summer means temperatures of 40-50 degrees Celsius.

Taxi ranks and pickup points are outside the arrivals exit. There is no train, tram, or metro to the city.

Pre-booked transfers cost KWD 8-15 (EUR 24-45) for a sedan to the city centre. The driver meets you inside the terminal with a name sign. Prices are fixed at booking. This is the most comfortable option, especially in summer when you do not want to stand outside waiting for a taxi.

Ride-hailing apps like Careem and Uber work in Kuwait. A ride to the city centre costs around KWD 3-6 (EUR 9-18) depending on demand. You will need mobile data or airport Wi-Fi to book. Wait times are usually under 10 minutes.

Rental cars are available from desks in the arrivals hall. Roads in Kuwait are modern and well-maintained. Driving is straightforward if you are comfortable with Gulf driving styles. Parking in the city is generally easy.

Hotel shuttles are offered by some larger hotels, especially those in the business district. Check with your hotel before arrival.

Public buses exist (KPTC) and the route 999 serves the airport, but service is infrequent and not practical for visitors with luggage.

To Salmiya or Hawally: slightly less than city centre, around KWD 4-7 (EUR 12-21) by taxi. To Jahra or Ahmadi: KWD 8-12 (EUR 24-36) by taxi.

Kuwaiti Dinar is one of the highest-value currencies in the world. Prices that look small in KWD are reasonable in absolute terms.

Kuwait Airport operates 24 hours and many flights arrive late at night or in the early morning hours, especially from South and Southeast Asia. Taxis are available around the clock. Ride-hailing apps work at night but availability can drop after midnight. Pre-booked transfers are the most reliable late-night option because your driver is guaranteed to be there regardless of arrival time. There is no public transport to speak of after dark.

The airport handles families well with accessible facilities. For families with lots of luggage, a pre-booked minivan is the most practical choice. Standard taxis can handle 2-3 suitcases but struggle with more. In summer, minimizing the time you spend outside with children is important because the heat is extreme. A pre-booked transfer waiting at arrivals means you go straight from air conditioning to air conditioning.

For pre-booked transfers, the driver waits in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name. The meeting point varies by terminal but is typically near the exit gates. For taxis, follow signs to the taxi rank outside the arrivals exit. There is usually an attendant managing the queue.

Take an airport taxi if you want to leave immediately without an app and do not mind a slightly higher price.
