How Much Does It Cost to Get from Hamburg Airport to the City?

Last updated: March 2026

Hamburg Airport is only 10 km from the city centre, making this one of the cheapest and quickest airport-to-city transfers in Germany.

Price comparison

| Transport | Price (EUR) | Time | Best for | |-----------|-------------|------|----------| | S-Bahn S1 | 3.70 | 25 min | Almost everyone | | Day ticket (all transport) | 8.20 | 25 min | If using public transport all day | | Taxi | 25-35 | 20-30 min | Comfort, heavy luggage | | Private transfer | 35-55 | 20-30 min | Fixed price, child seats |

The S-Bahn — best value in European airports

The S1 train runs every 10 minutes from a station built directly into the airport terminal. A single ticket (Einzelkarte) costs EUR 3.70 and gets you to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof in 25 minutes. From there, you can connect to the U-Bahn, buses, or regional trains to reach any part of the city.

If you plan to explore Hamburg by public transport, buy a day ticket for EUR 8.20. It covers the airport S-Bahn plus unlimited travel on all HVV transport for the rest of the day.

Tickets can be purchased from machines on the platform (cash or card) or through the HVV app.

Taxis

A metered taxi from the airport to various destinations:

| Destination | Approximate fare (EUR) | |------------|----------------------| | Hauptbahnhof | 25-30 | | St. Pauli / Reeperbahn | 28-35 | | HafenCity / Elbphilharmonie | 30-38 | | Altona | 25-32 | | Blankenese | 35-45 |

A small airport pickup surcharge of about EUR 3 is included in the meter start. No extra charge for standard luggage. Night surcharges are modest.

Private transfers

A sedan transfer costs EUR 35-55 depending on destination. This is more than a taxi but includes a fixed price, meet-and-greet in arrivals, flight monitoring, and the option to add child seats. For groups, a minivan for up to 6-8 passengers runs EUR 55-80.

Bottom line

The S-Bahn at EUR 3.70 is the obvious choice for most travellers. It is fast, frequent, and directly connected to the terminal. Taxis make sense for heavy luggage or destinations far from S-Bahn stops. Private transfers are for those who want guaranteed, comfortable door-to-door service.
