HAJ - Hannover

Arriving late at night at Hannover airport — your realistic options

Hannover airport handles flights into the late evening, and the occasional delay can push arrivals past midnight. Here is what changes when you land after dark.

S-Bahn schedule

The last S5 train from the airport departs just after midnight. If your flight lands at 11:30 PM and baggage claim takes 20-30 minutes, you will likely miss it. There is no night train service to replace it.

On Friday and Saturday nights, some German cities run extended transit schedules. Hannover does offer some night bus services in the city, but none serve the airport directly.

Taxis after midnight

The taxi rank at HAJ usually has a few cars available even late at night, since drivers know the last flights. However, after midnight the supply drops sharply. If there are no taxis at the rank, the airport has a taxi phone or you can ask at the information desk (if it is still staffed).

You can also call a Hannover taxi company directly — Hallo Taxi Hannover (0511 3811) is the largest operator. Wait times at 1-2 AM may be 15-25 minutes.

The fare to central Hannover does not change at night. German taxi meters use the same rate 24/7, so you will pay the standard 25-35 euros.

Pre-booked transfers

This is the safest bet for late arrivals. Your driver monitors your flight in real time and will be waiting whether you land at 11 PM or 2 AM. No phone calls, no waiting at an empty taxi rank, no figuring out a city you do not know in the dark.

The price is the same as a daytime booking — 40-65 euros for a sedan to the city center. Some companies charge a small surcharge (5-10 euros) for pickups after midnight, but this varies.

The airport after hours

Hannover airport is not designed for overnight stays. After the last flights, the terminal gradually shuts down. Shops and restaurants close, and the building becomes quiet. You can sit in the arrivals area for a while, but security may ask you to move on eventually.

If you are truly stuck, there are hotels near the airport. The Leonardo Hotel Hannover Airport is closest, reachable by a short taxi ride or even a brisk walk. Booking a room for a few hours is a reasonable plan B if your onward transport is not available until morning.

Recommendations

If your flight is scheduled to land after 10 PM, pre-book a transfer. If your flight is scheduled to land before 10 PM but you are worried about delays, pre-book anyway — the cancellation policies for most transfer services are more forgiving than the cost of being stranded. The S-Bahn is excellent during the day, but it does not help you at 1 AM.
