HAJ - Hannover

How much does it cost to get from Hannover airport to the city center?

Hannover Airport is 11 km north of the city center, and you have a clear choice between cheap public transit and more comfortable private options.

S-Bahn (train)

The S5 line from the airport to Hannover Hauptbahnhof costs approximately 3.80-4.20 euros for a single ticket in 2026 (GVH zone ABC). Tickets are available from machines on the platform. If you hold a Deutschlandticket (the 49-euro monthly pass for all German local transit), the S-Bahn is included at no extra cost.

A day ticket for the GVH network costs about 7-8 euros, which makes sense if you plan to use buses and trams after arriving.

Taxi

Hannover taxis run on meters. The fare from the airport to central Hannover is typically 25-35 euros. The base fare is around 4 euros, with roughly 2.20 euros per kilometer. Traffic adds time but not dramatically — there is no heavy congestion on the B522 highway between the airport and city under normal conditions.

During trade fair periods (especially Hannover Messe in April), traffic on the routes between the airport, the fairgrounds, and the city center can increase taxi fares by 5-10 euros due to detours and delays.

Private transfer

A sedan transfer for 1-3 passengers costs 40-65 euros to central Hannover. A minivan for up to 7 passengers runs 55-85 euros. These are fixed prices set at booking time, with no meter or surprises.

Beyond the city center

If you are heading outside Hannover proper, here are typical private transfer costs:

  • To Hannover Messe fairgrounds: 30-45 euros
  • To Hildesheim (35 km): 70-100 euros
  • To Celle (40 km): 75-110 euros
  • To Braunschweig (65 km): 100-140 euros
  • To Wolfsburg (90 km): 130-170 euros
  • To Hameln (50 km): 85-120 euros
Taxi fares to these destinations are comparable but metered, so traffic conditions affect the final price.

What is cheapest, what is best value

The S-Bahn is the clear winner on price — 4 euros versus 25-35 for a taxi. For a solo traveler or couple with light bags heading to the Hauptbahnhof area, the train is the obvious choice.

But if you are a group of 3-4 sharing a taxi (7-9 euros per person), the convenience advantage narrows the gap significantly. And for families or business travelers heading directly to a hotel or meeting, a pre-booked transfer at 40-65 euros is competitive when you factor in the time saved and door-to-door service.
