Arriving at Hannover airport with kids and family — what to plan for

Hannover Airport is a manageable size for families, and the transport connections into the city are good. Here is what you need to know.

Inside the terminal

The airport is organized across three terminals (A, B, C), all connected. The walk from gate to baggage claim is short, and the arrivals hall is not overwhelming. There are family restrooms with changing tables in all terminal areas. Elevators are available throughout — you will not be stuck carrying a stroller up stairs.

A small play area exists near the food court area, though by the time you have collected bags and cleared arrivals, most families just want to leave.

The S-Bahn with kids

The S5 train to Hauptbahnhof is 17 minutes and costs about 4 euros per adult. Children under 6 ride free on German public transit. Children 6-14 typically get reduced fares. The platform has elevators, and the trains have designated spaces for luggage and strollers.

That said, managing two children plus suitcases plus a stroller on a train platform is its own kind of adventure. If your hotel is near the Hauptbahnhof, it works. If you need to transfer to another bus or tram line after arriving, the complexity multiplies.

Taxis for families

Hannover taxis are generally spacious (Mercedes E-Class wagons are common) and can fit a family of four with standard luggage. German taxis are legally exempt from child seat requirements, so children can ride without a car seat. However, this may not sit well with every parent.

If you want a child seat, you will not find one in a standard taxi at the rank. You would need to call a taxi company in advance and request one, which is hit-or-miss.

Pre-booked transfers with child seats

This is the most reliable option for families who want child seats. When booking a private transfer, you can request infant seats, child seats, or boosters as part of the reservation. Reputable companies will have them installed and ready when you arrive.

A minivan transfer (which most families will want for space) costs 55-85 euros to central Hannover. That is more than the S-Bahn, obviously, but when you factor in the ease of walking from arrivals straight to a waiting car with seats already installed, it makes practical sense.

Travel during trade fairs

If you are arriving during a major fair (Hannover Messe, typically in April), the airport is busier and taxis are harder to get. This is another reason to pre-book — waiting 30 minutes in a taxi queue with tired children is nobody's idea of a good time.

Practical tips

  • Children under 6 ride free on all Hannover public transit.
  • The S-Bahn platform at the airport has elevators and is stroller-friendly.
  • Request child seats at booking time for private transfers — not at the airport.
  • If heading to Hannover Zoo (a common family destination), it is on tram line 11 from the Hauptbahnhof.
  • Pack snacks for the transfer. The arrivals area has a few shops, but options are limited once you exit.
