DYU - Dushanbe

Getting from Dushanbe Airport to the city with kids

Travelling with children through DYU is manageable, but a few things require planning ahead.

The terminal experience

Dushanbe Airport is a single-terminal, single-level building. There are no long corridors or confusing connections. The distance from the plane to the arrivals exit is short. The main bottleneck for families is passport control, which has no dedicated family or priority lane. During busy periods — particularly when flights from Istanbul, Dubai, or Moscow arrive close together — you may wait 30-60 minutes in line with tired children.

There are no dedicated baby-changing facilities in the arrivals area. The toilets are basic. If you need to change a nappy, bring your own supplies and be prepared to improvise.

Luggage

Trolleys are available near the carousels but sometimes run out. If you are travelling with a stroller, it will come through the oversized luggage area. Standard taxis may struggle with a stroller plus multiple suitcases — a larger vehicle or a pre-booked minivan is worth considering.

Child seats

This is the critical issue. Regular taxis at Dushanbe Airport do not carry child seats. Full stop. If your child requires a car seat by your own safety standards, you have two options: bring your own travel car seat, or book a transfer in advance and request a child seat specifically. Confirm the seat type (infant, toddler, booster) when booking.

The ride into the city

The drive is 15-25 minutes on a reasonably maintained road. It is not a stressful journey. The road from the airport passes through suburban Dushanbe before reaching the centre, so there is some to look at but nothing particularly jarring.

Food and supplies

The airport has very limited food options after landing. If your children need snacks or drinks immediately, bring them in your carry-on. Once you are in central Dushanbe, you will find small shops and markets easily.

Recommendations for families

  • Pre-book a transfer with a child seat request. This is the single most important step.
  • Write your hotel address in Cyrillic and keep it accessible on your phone.
  • Bring snacks, water, and entertainment for the passport control queue.
  • If you have a stroller, confirm that your transfer vehicle can accommodate it alongside your luggage.
  • Allow extra time for everything. Dushanbe is welcoming but moves at its own pace.
