DAR - Dar es Salaam

Getting from Dar es Salaam Airport to Your Hotel with Kids

Last updated: February 2026

Families visiting Tanzania typically pass through Dar es Salaam en route to Zanzibar or safari destinations. The airport arrival with children is manageable with some preparation, but the transport system is less family-oriented than in many Western countries.

The airport with children

Terminal 3 (international arrivals) is functional and air-conditioned. Immigration can be slow - having documents ready for each family member helps. Children need their own passports and visa documentation.

The restroom facilities are basic but usable. There is limited food and drink available in the arrivals area. If children are hungry after a long flight, pack snacks from the plane or buy drinks at the small vendors before exiting.

Luggage trolleys are available in the baggage claim area.

Car seats

Car seats are not standard in Tanzanian taxis. Most local families do not use them, and no taxi or Uber driver will have one. This is consistent across East Africa.

If a car seat is non-negotiable for your family, your options are: bring a travel car seat, or request one through a private transfer service. Not all transfer companies in Dar es Salaam have car seats, so confirm explicitly when booking. Safari operators who work with international families are more likely to have them available.

Vehicle considerations

A standard Dar es Salaam taxi is a sedan. With two adults, two children, and luggage from an international flight, it will be cramped. There is no guarantee of air conditioning working well in standard taxis.

For families, a pre-booked vehicle makes a meaningful difference. You can request a minivan or SUV with working AC and enough space for luggage. When negotiating with a taxi at the airport, you take what is available.

If you are heading to Zanzibar the next day, you may be carrying beach gear, snorkel equipment, and other items on top of regular luggage. Factor this into your vehicle needs.

The drive with children

If you arrive during rush hour (morning or late afternoon), the drive to the city center can take well over an hour. For children, sitting in slow traffic in a warm car is not pleasant. If you can time your arrival to avoid peak traffic, the experience is much better.

The road from the airport to the city is urban and not particularly scenic. It is functional transport, not part of the safari experience.

Safari families: planning the connection

Many families arrive in Dar es Salaam and connect to domestic flights or the Zanzibar ferry. If your connection is the next day, book a hotel near the airport or the ferry terminal depending on your next step.

If you need to get from the international terminal (Terminal 3) to the domestic terminal (Terminal 1 or 2) for a connecting flight, there is a shuttle bus between terminals. However, allow plenty of time as the service is not always reliable.

Practical family tips

Book your transfer in advance. Negotiating with taxi drivers at midnight with tired children and a pile of luggage is the worst-case scenario for starting a family trip.

Have Tanzanian Shillings in cash for any immediate needs. The ATM in the arrivals area is the quickest way to get local currency.

Keep expectations calibrated. Dar es Salaam is a developing city and the transport infrastructure reflects that. The experience improves dramatically once you reach your hotel or continue to Zanzibar or your safari destination.
