Several international flights arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) late in the evening, particularly connections through Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, and Addis Ababa. If your flight lands between 10 PM and 4 AM, here is what to expect.
The airport after dark
Terminal 3 remains operational for arriving flights regardless of the hour. Immigration and customs staff are present. The visa-on-arrival service operates through the night, though queues are typically shorter than during the afternoon rush.
The arrivals hall is quieter at night. Some exchange counters may close, but ATMs are available 24 hours. The selection of vendors thins out but basic services remain.
The upside: no traffic
This is significant. Dar es Salaam traffic during the day can turn a 30-minute drive into 90 minutes of gridlock. After about 9 PM, the roads clear dramatically. A late-night drive from the airport to the city center takes a reliable 20-30 minutes. This alone makes a late arrival less painful than an afternoon one.
Transport availability
Taxis wait at the airport for late flights. Drivers know the international arrival schedule and position themselves accordingly. The taxi area outside Terminal 3 will have cars available even after midnight.
The negotiation dynamic shifts at night. Drivers know there are fewer alternatives, so initial price quotes may be higher. Be prepared to negotiate. A fair late-night fare to the city center is 50,000-80,000 TZS ($20-32 USD).
Uber and Bolt availability drops significantly after midnight. You may find a car, but waiting 15-20 minutes is possible, and some requests may go unanswered. If relying on ride-hailing apps, have a backup plan.
Pre-booked transfers are the most dependable option for late arrivals. Your driver is there regardless of the hour, the price is confirmed, and there is no negotiation at midnight.
Safety at night
Dar es Salaam is a large city with the safety considerations that entails. For late-night airport arrivals, the practical advice is straightforward: use official transport from the designated area outside the terminal or a pre-booked service. Do not walk outside the airport perimeter at night. Keep valuables in your bag and out of sight during the drive.
The airport-to-city route on the main road (Julius Nyerere Road) is well-traveled. The road itself is fine at night.
Connecting to Zanzibar
If your ultimate destination is Zanzibar, a late-night arrival in Dar means staying overnight in the city and catching a morning ferry or flight. The ferry terminal opens early, with first departures around 7 AM. Some travelers stay at airport hotels and fly to Zanzibar the next morning - the flight is only 20 minutes.
Practical tips
Have US dollars for the visa if you need one on arrival ($50 USD). Have Tanzanian Shillings for the taxi fare - withdraw from the ATM before exiting the terminal.
Confirm your hotel has 24-hour reception. Not all Dar es Salaam hotels staff the desk through the night, particularly smaller properties.
If connecting to a safari or onward travel the next day, a late arrival plus jet lag can make the first morning challenging. Consider building in a buffer day if your schedule allows.
