New Chitose Airport (CTS) – Transfer & Transport Guide

New Chitose Airport is about 50 km south of Sapporo. The fastest and most popular option is the JR Rapid Airport train, which takes 37 minutes to Sapporo Station and costs JPY 1,150 (about EUR 7). Trains run every 15 minutes during the day.

An airport bus to central Sapporo takes 70–80 minutes and costs JPY 1,100 (EUR 6.50). A taxi runs about JPY 14,000–18,000 (EUR 85–110) and takes 50–70 minutes. A private transfer costs JPY 10,000–20,000 (EUR 60–120) depending on vehicle type.

For most travelers, the JR train is the clear winner — it is fast, frequent, reliable, and connects directly to Sapporo's subway system.

New Chitose is a large, modern airport with excellent facilities. After immigration (international) or deplaning (domestic), you collect bags and enter the arrivals area. The terminal is clean, well-signposted in English and Japanese, and easy to navigate.

The airport is connected directly to the JR train station via an underground walkway — follow the signs for JR Line. The walk takes about 5–8 minutes from the arrivals hall. Bus stops are outside the terminal on the ground level.

ATMs, currency exchange, SIM card vending machines, and convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson) are all readily available. The airport also has an onsen (hot spring bath), a cinema, and a Doraemon museum — it is genuinely worth exploring if you have time.

The JR Rapid Airport train is the default choice and for good reason. It is fast, punctual (this is Japan), comfortable, and drops you at Sapporo Station where you connect to the subway for the rest of the city. Reserved seats cost an extra JPY 530 but are rarely necessary outside peak holiday periods.

The airport bus is slightly cheaper and drops you at several hotels and stops in Sapporo, which can be convenient if your hotel is on the route. The downside is the longer journey time, especially in winter when road conditions can cause delays.

Japan Rail Pass holders can use the JR Rapid Airport at no extra cost — a significant saving if you have one.

The last JR Rapid Airport train to Sapporo departs around 10:53 PM. After that, you are limited to taxis, pre-booked transfers, or the occasional late bus.

Late-night taxis are available but the fare to Sapporo is steep — JPY 14,000–18,000 (EUR 85–110). A pre-booked transfer may be slightly cheaper and guarantees a driver waiting.

If your flight lands after 10 PM and you want to avoid the taxi fare, there is a capsule hotel inside the airport (New Chitose Airport Terminal Hotel) where you can stay overnight for JPY 4,000–6,000 (EUR 24–36) and catch the first morning train.

The JR train is manageable with children and suitcases — there is luggage space at the end of each car. However, during peak seasons (Golden Week, Obon, New Year, ski season), trains can be very crowded. Consider reserved seats for JPY 530 extra per person during these periods.

For families with very heavy luggage, the airport bus has large luggage compartments underneath and is easier for loading. A private transfer or taxi eliminates all luggage handling entirely.

Japanese taxis are immaculately clean and drivers are professional, but car seats are not standard. Bring your own or request one with a private transfer booking. Child seats are legally required in Japan for children under 6.

For the JR train, follow signs to the JR station — it is connected to the terminal via an underground walkway. Buy tickets at the machines (English available) or use your IC card (Suica, Kitaca, PASMO).

For the airport bus, stops are outside on the ground-level arrivals area. Each route has a numbered stop — check the bus counter inside the terminal for your route.

For a pre-booked transfer, drivers wait in the arrivals hall with a name board. The international and domestic terminals have separate arrival areas — confirm which one when you book.

For a taxi, the rank is directly outside the arrivals exit. Queue and wait — it is orderly, as you would expect in Japan.

Have a Japan Rail Pass? The JR train is free with your pass — use it.

Going to a hotel on the bus route? The airport bus drops you closer to some hotels than the train. Check the route map.

Heading to Niseko for skiing? Take the seasonal direct bus or book a private transfer. There is no practical train route.

Traveling with heavy luggage or small children? The bus or a private transfer handles luggage more easily than the train during peak times.

Arriving after 11 PM? Either take a taxi, book a transfer, or sleep at the airport hotel and train it in the morning.

Renting a car? Worthwhile if exploring Hokkaido beyond Sapporo. Winter driving requires confidence — roads can be icy and snowy.
