BZE - Belize City

Arriving at BZE Airport with Kids and Family

Belize is a popular family destination, but the journey from BZE airport to your resort usually involves at least one connection. Here is how to make it smoother.

Getting through the airport

BZE is a small, single-terminal airport. Immigration can be slow when multiple flights arrive close together, so be prepared to wait 30-60 minutes in line. There is no fast-track lane for families. Bring snacks and something for the kids to do in the queue. Restrooms are available in the arrivals hall.

Child seats

Airport taxis at BZE do not carry child seats. Belize does not have strict car seat laws, but if you want one for safety, you need to either bring your own or pre-book a transfer and request a seat in advance. Most private transfer companies can arrange one if given notice.

For the 20-minute ride to Belize City, many families manage without a seat. For the longer drives to San Ignacio (2+ hours) or Placencia (3.5+ hours), a child seat is strongly recommended.

Luggage considerations

Families tend to travel with more bags. Standard airport taxis are sedans that can handle two large suitcases and a couple of carry-ons. If you have a stroller, a car seat, and multiple bags, request a larger vehicle through a pre-booked transfer.

If you are taking the water taxi to the cayes, you will need to carry your own bags from the taxi to the boat. The terminal is not large, but there are no porters. Pack in a way that you can manage everything with the kids in tow.

Onward travel with kids

To the islands (Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker): The water taxi takes 75-90 minutes and can be bumpy in rough weather. Young children usually do fine, but if your child is prone to motion sickness, consider the 15-minute domestic flight from TZA instead. The flight costs more (75-100 USD vs 20-25 USD for the boat) but is faster and calmer.

To San Ignacio or Placencia by road: These are long drives. Bring water, snacks, and entertainment. Rest stops are limited. A private transfer gives you flexibility to stop when needed, whereas shared shuttles stick to a schedule.

Timing matters

If possible, book flights that arrive before 3 PM. This gives you time to clear immigration, reach your connection (taxi, boat, or domestic flight), and arrive at your destination before dark. Late arrivals with kids mean potentially navigating unfamiliar roads at night or missing the last water taxi.

Summary

Pre-booking a transfer is the easiest path for families. You get a confirmed vehicle, can request child seats, and avoid the stress of sorting transport with tired children. For island-bound families, weigh the water taxi against a domestic flight based on your children's ages and your luggage volume.
