BZE receives international flights until around 10-11 PM. If your flight is delayed or you are on one of the later arrivals, here is what to expect.
Taxi availability after dark
Taxis are usually available for all scheduled flight arrivals, including late ones. However, the number of vehicles drops after 9 PM. If several flights land around the same time, you may wait longer than usual. There is no ride-hailing app that works reliably at BZE, so the taxi rank and pre-booked transfers are your only options.
Should you drive to your resort at night?
If your destination is Belize City center or a nearby hotel, a taxi at night is fine. The ride is short (20-30 minutes) and the route is straightforward.
For longer destinations like San Ignacio (2+ hours), Hopkins (2.5+ hours), or Placencia (3.5+ hours), driving at night is not ideal. Belize's highways are mostly two-lane roads with no street lighting. Animals, cyclists without reflectors, and occasional potholes make night driving risky. Many experienced Belize travelers avoid driving these routes after dark.
The practical approach for late arrivals
If you land after 8 PM and your final destination is more than an hour away, the most sensible plan is:
1. Pre-book a transfer to a hotel near the airport or in Belize City 2. Stay one night 3. Travel to your destination the next morning
There are a few hotels near the airport along the Northern Highway, and several in Belize City. Rates are reasonable (50-100 USD per night for a decent room).
Water taxi and domestic flights
The last water taxi to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker typically departs around 4:30-5 PM. If you land in the evening, you will not make it. Domestic flights from TZA also stop running by late afternoon.
For island-bound travelers arriving at night, a hotel near the airport and an early morning connection is the standard approach.
Pre-booking matters more at night
During the day, you can afford to be flexible. At night, having a confirmed driver waiting removes real uncertainty. You know someone is there, the price is agreed, and you are not standing in a dark parking lot trying to find a ride.
What about the airport itself?
BZE closes after the last flight. You cannot sleep in the terminal. If you have a very early morning connection, you need a nearby hotel. The airport has no lounge facilities for overnight stays.
