Getting from Stockholm Skavsta Airport to Stockholm

Stockholm Skavsta (NYO) is not in Stockholm. It is 100 km southwest of central Stockholm, next to the town of Nyköping. It is a Ryanair and Wizz Air hub — cheap fares but a long transfer. The Flygbussarna coach (now branded Vy flygbussarna) to Stockholm Cityterminalen takes 80-90 minutes when traffic is normal; the operator prices it dynamically and sells cheapest online or in the app, so check flygbussarna.se for your date. A taxi to central Stockholm is the expensive option and Sweden deregulated taxi fares, so every company sets its own and there is no standard price to quote — do not take one on impulse. Uber and Bolt operate in Stockholm but do not pick up reliably at Skavsta. A pre-booked transfer runs SEK 1,500-2,100 (~€135-190) for a sedan. Many travelers also take a train from Nyköping station (7 km from the airport) to Stockholm Central; SJ prices tickets dynamically, so book ahead at sj.se for the cheap fares. Budget at least 2 hours door-to-door to central Stockholm; in winter or bad weather, 2.5-3 hours.

Skavsta is a converted military airfield serving Ryanair and Wizz Air — two large airlines with high-load-factor flights. Most other carriers have pulled out. Flights land with 160-230 passengers at once and baggage belts are not always lightning fast.

The first hour after landing is routine: deplane via jet bridge or stairs, walk across the apron or through the old corridors (the terminal shows its age), Schengen formalities are a spot-check, baggage typically takes 15-30 minutes. Non-Schengen arrivals (UK, Morocco, some Eastern European routes) hit a passport desk that is sometimes under-staffed — 20-45 minutes.

The arrivals hall is small and functional. A row of car rental counters (Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Enterprise, Mabi). A café, a currency exchange you should ignore (rates are bad), toilets, and the all-important Flygbussarna coach desk.

Crucial psychological note: Most first-time travelers walk out and think "Stockholm is right here." It is not. The terminal exit leads to a small, rural, forested setting with nothing around but the coach park and a handful of taxi cars. The actual city of Stockholm is a 90-minute coach ride away. Mentally prepare for this — many tourists miss their first evening in Stockholm because they expected a 20-minute transfer.

Flygbussarna (airport coach): The default, now branded Vy flygbussarna. Runs from NYO to Stockholm Cityterminalen (attached to T-Centralen / Stockholm Central Station). The operator does not publish a flat fare — it says buying on the website or in the app saves 10-20% against the counter, and the ticket is then valid for any departure on that route within three months. You can also buy at the Flygbussarna desk at Skavsta or at Cityterminalen, or on board (no cash). Check the current price at flygbussarna.se. Takes 80-90 minutes in normal traffic, 100-120 minutes in peak or winter conditions. Coaches are modern and comfortable with Wi-Fi, toilet, and luggage storage. Departures coordinate with Ryanair and Wizz arrivals. This is what almost everyone takes, and it works.

Train via Nyköping: Nyköping central station is about 7 km from Skavsta. Sörmlandstrafiken's bus 515 runs between the airport and Nyköping town centre via the train and bus stations, roughly every 30-60 minutes during the day, less often evenings. The airport and Nyköping sit in the same fare zone, so it is a one-zone ticket: SEK 35 for an adult single, SEK 23 for youth or student (Sörmlandstrafiken prices from 1 July 2026). Buy at the Pressbyrån in the terminal, in the Sörmlandstrafiken app, or on board — no cash on board. From Nyköping, SJ regional trains run to Stockholm Central in about 50-60 minutes; SJ prices dynamically, so booking ahead at sj.se is what makes this route cheap. Total door-to-door: 2-2.5 hours. Usually cheaper than Flygbussarna if you book ahead, but more hassle.

Taxi: Sweden has a free-market taxi system — every company sets its own rates, and tourist scams at airports are a real problem. Because fares are deregulated there is no standard price to quote for the 100 km into central Stockholm, and any figure you read online is really one company's guess at another company's pricing. What is reliable: every taxi must display a yellow price sticker on the rear passenger window showing its comparison price — read it, and agree the fare or confirm the meter before you get in. Major companies (Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir, Taxi 020, Cabonline) are safe; off-brand "taxis" quoting eye-watering flat rates do exist. Simply do not take a taxi from Skavsta to central Stockholm unless you have a good reason — it is many times the coach price for limited time saving.

Uber / Bolt: Both operate in Sweden. Uber and Bolt pickups are legally allowed at Skavsta but driver supply is very thin, because most drivers are based in Stockholm and won't deadhead to NYO. The app quotes a price when you request, and over 100 km it will not be cheap. Not a reliable plan.

Pre-booked transfer: Sedan SEK 1,500-2,100 (~€135-190) to central Stockholm. Minivan SEK 1,900-2,600 (~€170-235). Driver meets you inside arrivals with a name sign. Useful for groups of 3-4 where the per-head cost matches coach tickets, or for travelers arriving late at night.

Rental car: Reasonable option if you are staying in Nyköping, on the Södermanland archipelago, or touring southern Sweden. For central Stockholm, parking costs are high and a car is unnecessary. Six rental companies operate at the airport; rates move with season and demand, so compare when you book.

Notes: Sweden deregulated taxi fares, so there is no standard price for any of these runs and no honest way to print one — every taxi must display a yellow comparison-price sticker on the rear passenger window, so read it and agree the fare before you get in. Skavsta takes Ryanair flights until late, occasionally past midnight. Flygbussarna typically runs to match scheduled arrivals — the last coach is usually the last scheduled-flight arrival of the night. Check the Flygbussarna app or website for the exact last-coach time on your date.

If your flight is delayed and you miss the last Flygbussarna: options narrow quickly.

• Taxis are usually present for known late flights but supply is thin and prices higher. Confirm the fare before getting in.
• Uber / Bolt at NYO overnight is not reliable. You may find one, but you may not.
• Trains from Nyköping do not run through the night.
• Pre-booked transfer is the safe option: driver tracks the flight, waits for delays, and you know the price in advance.

For any arrival at or after 23:00, pre-booking a transfer or confirming a specific taxi company in advance is the right move. Swedish winters add fog, snow, and ice to the equation, extending the drive time to 2+ hours. Do not assume a "last resort" will exist at midnight in a forest in Sörmland.

Skavsta is physically easy with kids — short distances, level access, clean toilets, and a dependable Flygbussarna coach with luggage space underneath. The real challenge is the 90-minute onward journey. For tired toddlers landing at 22:00, that last stretch is rough whether by coach, train, or transfer.

Child seats: Swedish taxis do not carry child seats by default. By law children under 135 cm need an approved restraint, but taxis are exempt. For peace of mind, pre-book a transfer specifying child seats — most operators include them or charge a small extra fee. Rental cars can be booked with seats too; confirm the daily charge with the rental company.

Luggage: Flygbussarna handles luggage under the coach — count on 2 large bags per passenger, no issue. Trains have limited luggage racks — fine with 1-2 bags per group, awkward with more. Pre-booked transfers with minivans handle 6-8 bags plus strollers.

Food / supplies: The airport café is basic and expensive. If you are traveling with kids, buy snacks in the departure airport before flying — and know that the Flygbussarna makes a scheduled stop where you can briefly grab a bathroom.

Flygbussarna coach: The coach park is directly outside the arrivals exit — you walk out and see the line of coaches. Buy tickets online (QR code scan) for fastest boarding, or at a small counter inside arrivals. The correct coach has "Flygbussarna" and "Stockholm" on the windshield display.

Taxi: Official rank outside arrivals. Major companies (Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir, Cabonline) usually queue in the front; always check the yellow fare sticker before getting in.

Uber / Bolt (if you manage to get one): Designated pickup area per the app. Pickups are legal but supply is scarce.

Pre-booked transfer: Driver waits inside the arrivals hall at the exit of baggage claim with a name sign. This is the simplest arrangement and does not depend on mobile signal or app reliability.

Local bus to Nyköping: Sörmlandstrafiken bus 515 stops just outside the terminal. Check the Sörmlandstrafiken app for real-time departures.

• Late arrival (after 22:30): Pre-booked transfer — public transport is winding down
• Early departure (before 05:30): Pre-booked transfer or stay near the airport overnight
• Winter / bad weather: Pre-booked transfer — roads to Stockholm can get slow and slippery
• Connecting to Arlanda (ARN) or Bromma (BMA): Pre-booked transfer (the cross-airport Flygbussarna connection exists but is slow)
