The ZTL factor
Florence's Zona a Traffico Limitato covers most of the historic center. Unauthorized vehicles entering the ZTL are fined automatically by cameras — fines of EUR 80–100+ per entry. This matters because:
- Taxis are authorized to enter the ZTL and can drop you at your hotel door
- Transfers with proper licenses can enter the ZTL as well
- Rental cars and unauthorized vehicles cannot enter without a fine
- The tram runs to stops at the edge of the ZTL, from where you walk
