Getting from Florence Airport to the City with Kids

Last updated: March 2026

Florence is a wonderful city for families, but getting from the airport to your hotel with children and luggage requires a small amount of planning — mainly around car seats and the ZTL.

Child car seat situation

Italian law requires appropriate child restraints for children under 150 cm tall (roughly under 12 years old). Here is how this plays out:

| Transport | Car seat provided? | Notes | |-----------|-------------------|-------| | T2 Tram | N/A (public transport) | No seats needed, stroller space available | | Taxi | No | Legally required but rarely available | | Pre-booked transfer | Yes, on request | Specify child's age and weight when booking |

Italian taxis technically should have child seats available, but in practice almost none do. If your children need car seats, a pre-booked transfer is the only reliable option.

The tram with children

The T2 tram is family-friendly in principle — there is a designated space for strollers and wheelchairs, and children under 6 travel free. However:

  • During peak hours (8–9 AM, 5–7 PM), the tram can be crowded, making strollers awkward
  • You need to manage your own luggage while watching children
  • The tram stops require a short walk to most hotels — manageable but not ideal with tired toddlers
For a family of four with one stroller and light luggage, the tram works well outside peak hours. For families with heavy luggage or very young children, a taxi or transfer is less stressful.

Hotel access in the ZTL

Many family-friendly hotels in Florence are inside the ZTL (restricted traffic zone). A taxi or licensed transfer can drive you directly to the door. If you take the tram, you will walk from the nearest stop — usually 5–15 minutes — through cobblestone streets that can be challenging with strollers and rolling luggage.

Ask your hotel about the nearest tram stop and whether the walk is stroller-friendly. Some parts of the historic center have very uneven surfaces.

Heading to Tuscan countryside with kids

If your family is heading to an agriturismo in Chianti or a villa in the countryside, a pre-booked transfer from FLR is the smoothest option. The driver provides car seats, loads your luggage, and takes you directly there. Prices range from EUR 70–180 depending on distance.
