What drives the price
Traffic is the biggest factor — bigger than distance. During rush hours (8–11 AM, 5–9 PM), Careem and inDrive use dynamic pricing, and the same route to Clifton that takes 20–25 minutes at midnight can take 60–90 minutes at 6 PM. You pay for both the surge and the extra time.

Yellow and white cabs are negotiated, and drivers at the airport routinely open well above what they will accept. There are also official taxi counters on the landside where a dispatcher quotes a price — if it does not suit, move to the next counter. Either way, agree the fare before you get in.
The trick that works
Open Careem or inDrive as soon as you have data. The app quotes the fare before you accept it. That number is useful even if you never take the ride — it is the only live, destination-specific benchmark you will have, and it tells you instantly whether a cab driver's quote is reasonable.
Cash vs card
Careem accepts card payments through the app. inDrive and regular taxis are almost always cash only. Have some rupees on you when you land. ATMs in the arrivals hall work with Visa and Mastercard, and there are exchange counters in the terminal.
