Kolkata is one of the most affordable cities in the world for airport transport. Even premium options cost a fraction of what you would pay in Europe or North America.
Price breakdown by transport type
| Option | How it is priced | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Metro (Yellow Line) | Distance-based; cheapest by a wide margin | Jai Hind (Biman Bandar) station; change at Noapara |
| Auto-rickshaw | Negotiated, no meter guarantee | Short distances |
| Ola / Uber | Quoted in the app before you accept | Surge pricing possible |
| Prepaid taxi | Rate posted at the counter, paid up front | AC costs more |
| Private transfer | Fixed per vehicle, agreed at booking | Meet-and-greet |

Distances to popular destinations
What you pay tracks the distance, and the prepaid counter posts its own rate for each of these on the day. Rather than a fare table that goes stale, here is what actually drives the number:
| Destination | Distance | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|
| New Town / Rajarhat | ~8 km | Cheapest — the airport's own side of the city |
| Salt Lake / Sector V | ~10 km | Cheap |
| Park Street | ~17 km | Mid |
| Sealdah Station | ~17 km | Mid |
| Esplanade / BBD Bagh | ~18 km | Mid |
| Howrah Station | ~22 km | Dearest of the common runs |
What affects the price
Traffic is the main variable. Kolkata traffic, especially on VIP Road and EM Bypass, can be intense during rush hours (8–10 AM, 5–8 PM). Metered auto-rickshaws and Ola/Uber fares climb during slow traffic.
Rain causes significant disruptions in Kolkata. During monsoon season (June–September), waterlogged roads can double journey times and trigger heavy surge pricing on app cabs.
AC vs non-AC matters for prepaid taxis. An air-conditioned car costs a little more than a non-AC option — the counter will show you both rates. Given Kolkata's heat and humidity, AC is worth the small premium.
Tips to save money
- The Metro is extraordinarily cheap and efficient. If your hotel is near a Metro station and you are traveling light, it is the best value by far — just budget for the change at Noapara onto the Blue Line.
- Ola often undercuts Uber in Kolkata. Check both apps and take the cheaper option.
- Prepaid taxi counters prevent fare disputes. Pay inside, get a receipt, and there is nothing to negotiate with the driver.
- For groups of 3–4, a private transfer is priced per vehicle rather than per head, which closes most of the gap with individual Ola rides while being considerably more comfortable.
