Traveling Through Kolkata Airport with Kids and Family

Last updated: March 2026

Arriving at Kolkata Airport with children is manageable, especially if you plan your transport in advance. The airport is modern, the distances are short, and transport is affordable — the main challenge is the heat, the crowds, and navigating an unfamiliar environment with tired kids.

The airport experience with kids

CCU's terminal is reasonably modern with air conditioning, clean restrooms (some with changing facilities), and a few food outlets. There is no dedicated family lounge or play area, but the compact layout means you are outside quickly — typically within 15–20 minutes of leaving the aircraft for domestic flights, longer for international.

The arrivals area outside can feel overwhelming with crowds, noise, and heat. Having a clear plan for where to go helps enormously when managing children.

Transport options for families

| Option | Family Rating | Car Seats? | Luggage Space | Cost to City Center | |--------|--------------|-----------|---------------|--------------------| | Private transfer (Innova/SUV) | Best | On request (limited) | Excellent | INR 900–1,500 (~10–17 EUR) | | Prepaid taxi (sedan) | Good | Not available | Tight for families | INR 350–500 (~4–6 EUR) | | Ola/Uber (SUV option) | Good | Not available | Depends on vehicle | INR 400–700 (~5–8 EUR) | | Metro | Possible | Not applicable | Carry your own | INR 25–40 (~0.30–0.50 EUR) |

Car seats in Kolkata

Car seat use is not standard practice in Indian taxis. Prepaid taxis and Ola/Uber cars will not have them. Private transfer services may be able to provide one on request, but availability is genuinely limited. Bringing your own car seat is the most reliable approach if you are traveling with infants or toddlers.

Indian traffic patterns — frequent stops, lane changes, and close-quarters driving — actually make car seats more important here than in many countries, not less.

Managing the heat

Kolkata is hot and humid for most of the year. Temperatures regularly exceed 35 degrees Celsius from March to October. When choosing transport:

  • Always choose an AC vehicle. The small premium (INR 50–100 extra for a prepaid taxi) is essential for children.
  • Have water ready before leaving the terminal. Buy bottles inside.
  • Minimize time outside between the terminal and your vehicle. A private transfer driver meeting you inside removes the need to wait in the heat.

Practical tips for families at CCU

  • Book a larger vehicle — a Toyota Innova or Ertiga fits a family of four with luggage comfortably. Standard sedans are tight.
  • Have INR cash ready for the prepaid taxi counter. ATMs are inside arrivals.
  • The Metro works for families traveling light, but escalators and turnstiles with strollers and suitcases are difficult during busy periods.
  • Keep a printed hotel address in Bengali or Hindi — some drivers may not read English addresses easily.
  • Pack snacks for the kids. The drive through Kolkata traffic can take 30–60 minutes with frequent stops.
  • Evening arrivals are often easier — less heat, lighter traffic, and calmer atmosphere at the airport.
