Cost of Getting from Gaborone Airport to the City

Sir Seretse Khama International Airport is about 15 km from central Gaborone. The ride is short — but because taxis are unmetered and no airport tariff is published, there is no official fare to look up.

Why this page will not quote you a number

Gaborone taxis are not metered. No authority sets or publishes a fare for the airport run — every price is negotiated between you and the driver. Any figure printed here would be a snapshot of somebody's guess, and quoting one confidently would arm you with a number that might be a year out of date in a negotiation where being wrong costs you money.

So instead, here is where to get a current number:

Ask your hotel when you book the room. This is the single best move. Hotels arrange airport pickups daily and know exactly what the going rate is this month. Their answer is current; a guide's is not.

Check Bolt in the app. Where available, Bolt quotes you before you confirm — a real number, on your phone, at the moment you need it. Airport availability is inconsistent, but it is worth opening the app just to see the rate, even if you then take a taxi.

Get a transfer quote. A pre-booked transfer is fixed when you book, so the price is settled before you land.

Hotel shuttle. Often free where offered — the Avani, Cresta Lodge and Grand Palm typically run them. Always confirm when booking.

How the negotiation actually works

Factors that influence price: time of day (rush hour rides take longer), your destination (Phakalane and Mokolodi are much further out than the central business district, Government Enclave or Main Mall), luggage volume, and frankly whether the driver thinks you know local prices.

The strategy that works is not memorising a number from a guide — it is arriving with a current one. Ask your hotel, or check the Bolt quote on your phone, then state that figure confidently. Most drivers will accept or counter close to it. Agree the fare before the car moves, and confirm it is in pula.

Keep it in perspective

Botswana is not a budget destination, and service prices reflect a relatively developed economy. But the airport is close to the city and the ride is quick, so this is a minor line in your trip budget. Do not let a small difference in taxi negotiation ruin your first impression of the country.

Payment

Taxis accept cash only — Botswana pula. There is a currency exchange desk and ATMs in the terminal, so you can get cash before heading outside. Pre-booked transfers can usually be paid online. If paying cash, carry small denominations; a driver may not be able to break a large note.

Get a current price from your hotel, the Bolt app, or a transfer quote — not from a table. If your hotel offers a shuttle, take it. The airport is close, the ride is quick, and the cost is modest; the only thing worth preparing is knowing roughly what to expect before you start negotiating.
