The official taxi dispatch operates as long as flights are arriving. This is your most reliable option. The fixed-rate system works the same at midnight as it does at noon — pay at the counter, get your voucher, board your assigned taxi. The city's COP 1,100 night surcharge applies between 7 PM and 5 AM.
Safety at night
Cartagena is generally safe for tourists in the main areas (Walled City, Bocagrande, Getsemani), but common sense applies at night:
- Use the official taxi counter — do not accept rides from people approaching you in the arrivals hall
- Keep your phone and valuables out of sight during the ride
- Have your hotel address written down or on your phone screen
- The ride is only 10–20 minutes, so you will be at your hotel quickly
The area around the airport is a residential neighborhood — not dangerous, but not a tourist zone either. Get in your taxi and go.
The Old Town drop-off at night
If you are staying inside the Walled City, remember that your taxi drops you at the nearest car-accessible point. Walking the last stretch over cobblestones at midnight with luggage is less pleasant than during the day — the streets are darker and less busy.
Some hotels can arrange for someone to meet you at the drop-off point. Call or message them before you land if arriving after 10 PM.
Pre-booked transfer advantages at night
A pre-booked transfer costs more than the regulated taxi fare but provides:
- A driver monitoring your flight for delays
- A name board at arrivals — no searching or negotiating
