Getting from Samarkand Airport to the City Center and Beyond

Samarkand International Airport (SKD) is about 6 km north of the city center. A taxi takes 15-20 minutes; fares are negotiated at the curb or set by the Yandex Go app, and there is no published tariff, so confirm the price before you ride. Public buses (routes 52, 31, and M1) also run from the airport to the central bus station and railway station, roughly 6 AM to 9 PM — a slower but far cheaper option if you are not in a hurry. There is no rail link direct to the terminal. Samarkand has seen significant tourism infrastructure investment ahead of its growing status as a Silk Road destination, but airport ground transport remains informal outside the bus routes.

SKD's terminal was modernized in recent years and handles both domestic and international flights. After landing, you go through passport control — which can be thorough for international arrivals — collect your bags, and exit into the arrivals hall. The terminal is clean and functional but not large.

Outside, you will find a mix of official and unofficial taxi drivers. Some approach you inside the terminal. There is no organized taxi queue or dispatcher system like you would find at larger airports. Yandex Go (the regional ride-hailing app) works in Samarkand, which gives you a metered, app-based option if you have the app installed and a local SIM or data connection.

Money exchange is available inside the terminal, and there are ATMs. Having some Uzbek som on hand for the taxi ride is recommended, as many drivers do not accept cards.

Official and unofficial taxis wait outside the terminal. There is no strict separation between licensed and unlicensed drivers, and there is no published tariff. Agree on a fare before getting in — drivers commonly open with a higher opening quote to tourists, which is negotiable.

Yandex Go is the ride-hailing app that works in Samarkand. It gives you an app-calculated fare estimate upfront and avoids negotiation, though the fare is dynamic (it moves with demand and time of day) rather than a fixed published rate. You need the app installed and mobile data.

Pre-booked private transfers are increasingly popular with international visitors. A driver meets you with a name sign, the price is fixed at booking, and the vehicle is confirmed. This is particularly useful if you arrive on an international flight and do not yet have a local SIM.

Rental cars are available but not common for tourists in Samarkand. The city is compact enough to explore on foot and by taxi.

SKD receives some late evening flights, particularly domestic services from Tashkent. Taxi drivers generally appear for scheduled arrivals even at night. However, the later you arrive, the fewer drivers will be waiting, and those who are may quote higher fares.

Yandex Go works at night but driver availability drops. The area around the airport is not well-served by streetlights and there is nothing within walking distance. Pre-booking a transfer is the sensible choice for any arrival after 10 PM.

Most taxis at SKD are sedans (Chevrolet models are dominant in Uzbekistan). Luggage space is adequate for two travelers but can be tight for families with multiple large bags. If you have significant luggage, request a larger vehicle through a pre-booked transfer.

Child car seats are not available in taxis and are not culturally expected. Bring your own if you need one. The roads between the airport and city center are paved and in reasonable condition.

If you pre-book a transfer, your driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall or just outside the exit with a name sign. The terminal is small, so finding each other is straightforward.

For taxis, walk past the drivers who approach you inside the terminal — they tend to charge more — and head to the parking area outside where you can compare options. If using Yandex Go, step outside and request a ride from the pickup area in front of the terminal.

Use Yandex Go if: you have the app installed, have mobile data, and want the cheapest reliable option. The fare is transparent and you avoid negotiation.

Take a taxi if: you are comfortable negotiating in a country where English is not widely spoken among taxi drivers. A few words of Russian or Uzbek help enormously.

Pre-book a transfer if: this is your first time in Uzbekistan, you arrive late, you do not have a local SIM, or you want someone holding a sign with your name after a long international journey. The cost difference is modest in absolute terms.
