Late Night Arrivals at Samarkand International Airport (SKD)

Samarkand airport handles a limited number of evening flights, mostly domestic services from Tashkent and occasional international arrivals. If your flight lands after dark, here is the reality on the ground.

What the airport looks like at night

SKD is quiet after the last flights of the day. The terminal remains open for arriving passengers but most services — shops, exchange counters — close. ATMs are usually still operational. The arrivals area is lit and staffed for incoming flights but empties quickly once passengers clear.

The area outside the terminal is not well lit. There is nothing within walking distance — no hotels, restaurants, or shops near the airport.

Taxi availability after dark

For scheduled evening flights, some taxi drivers will be waiting outside. However, availability is unpredictable. On a good night, several drivers will be there. On a quiet night, or if your flight is delayed, you might find one or two — or none.

Yandex Go works at night in theory, but driver availability in the app drops significantly after 10 PM in Samarkand. You may wait 15-20 minutes for a driver to accept the ride, or longer.

Negotiation gets harder at night

The fewer drivers available, the less leverage you have on pricing. Late-night taxi drivers at SKD know they may be the only option and price accordingly. Expect to pay 50,000-80,000 UZS for a ride that would cost 30,000-40,000 during the day. This is still only $4-6 USD, but the principle stands.

The case for pre-booking

For late arrivals in Samarkand, a pre-booked transfer is not a luxury — it is practical common sense. Here is why:

  • You are arriving in a city where most drivers do not speak English
  • The airport area is dark and quiet at night
  • Taxi availability is uncertain
  • You likely do not have a local SIM card for Yandex Go
  • The cost of a transfer ($10-20) is minimal relative to the inconvenience of being stuck
Your driver will track your flight, be there when you land regardless of delays, and take you directly to your hotel. After a long journey to Central Asia, this is worth every dollar.

Safety considerations

Uzbekistan is generally safe, and Samarkand has low crime rates. Taking an unofficial taxi at night is not dangerous in the way it might be in some other destinations. The main risk is not safety but inconvenience: ending up at the wrong address because of a language barrier, or simply not finding a ride.

If you arrive with no plan

If you land late without a transfer booked and no taxis are available, ask the airport staff for help. They may be able to call a driver. Your hotel may also be able to send someone, though response time at night will vary. Having your hotel's phone number saved is essential for late arrivals.
