Transfer pricing in Jamaica is quoted in US dollars, and the main variable is distance. Sangster International Airport is close to Montego Bay but a significant drive from the other major resort areas.
Why there are no prices on this page
Two taxi operators are authorised at MBJ — JUTA (Jamaica Union of Travellers Association) and JCAL. They share an Authorised Airport Taxi desk just outside the Customs exit, and their rates are posted there: fixed, per destination, not negotiated. That is the good news.
The catch is that neither the airport nor the operators publish those rates in advance, and private transfer and shuttle prices are set by each company. There is no public tariff for us to quote and no authority setting one route-by-route. Any figures we printed would be somebody's recollection, quietly ageing — and at an airport where the real rate is posted on a board 30 metres past customs, sending you in with a stale number helps nobody.
So: read the board at the taxi desk, and get transfers quoted in writing before you travel.

Private Transfer vs. Shared Shuttle — the maths that matters
This is the one comparison worth understanding before you land, because it does not depend on any specific price:
- A private transfer is priced per vehicle (typically up to 4 passengers).
- A shared shuttle is priced per person, and makes multiple hotel stops on the way.
So the shuttle's advantage shrinks with every extra traveller. For a solo traveller heading to Negril or Ocho Rios, a shuttle seat is normally much cheaper. For a couple, the two figures move close together. For a family of four, you are multiplying the shuttle fare by four against one flat vehicle price, and the private transfer usually wins on cost as well as on comfort and time.
Do that sum with the actual quotes you are given, not with numbers from a guide.
JUTA and JCAL taxi rates
JUTA and JCAL are the licensed, government-recognised operators at the airport. Rates are posted at the shared Authorised Airport Taxi desk and are fixed — no negotiation, which removes the haggling that catches people out elsewhere. For Montego Bay destinations they are competitive with a pre-booked transfer; over longer distances a pre-booked transfer is often cheaper, but compare the posted board against your quote rather than assuming.
What the Price Includes
A standard private transfer includes: door-to-door service, air-conditioned vehicle, luggage handling, and a set amount of waiting time (usually 30–60 minutes for flight delays). What may or may not be included: tolls on the North Coast Highway, bottled water, and child seats. Ask when you book.
Shared shuttles include: airport pickup, transport to your hotel, and luggage handling. They do not include a direct route — expect stops at other hotels along the way.
Tipping
Tipping is customary in Jamaica. For transfer drivers, something in the region of 10–15% of the fare is the usual gesture, and more for a long route. Some travellers tip more generously for drivers who are helpful with luggage and provide local information during the ride.
Payment
Most transfer companies accept credit card payment when booking online. Airport taxis accept USD cash. Some drivers accept JMD but USD is universally preferred for tourist transport.
The Bottom Line
Jamaica is not an expensive place to move around by Caribbean standards, and MBJ is unusually well organised about it: the authorised taxi rates are posted, fixed and non-negotiable at a desk you walk straight past on the way out. Check that board, get any transfer quoted in writing beforehand, confirm whether your resort already includes the pickup, and do the per-vehicle versus per-person sum for your own group size. Those four steps will serve you better than any price range we could print.
