DYU - Dushanbe

How much does it cost to get from Dushanbe Airport to the city?

Last updated: April 2026

The distance from Dushanbe International Airport to central Dushanbe is about 10 km. It is a short ride, but pricing is not straightforward because there are no metered taxis.

Taxi costs

There is no meter and no published tariff — neither the city nor the airport sets one — so the fare is entirely negotiated before you get in. That means there is no honest number for us to print, and we have removed the ones that used to be here. What is true: prices go up at night, with a lot of luggage, and for foreign arrivals who obviously do not know the local rate.

The practical move is to find out the going rate from someone who is not selling you a ride: ask your hotel what a local pays for the airport run before you land, and agree the fare with the driver before the car moves.

Pre-booked transfer costs

A private transfer booked in advance costs whatever you fix at booking — that is the point of it in a city with no tariff. It is likely more than negotiating hard on the spot, but you get a confirmed vehicle, a driver with a name sign, and no negotiation at midnight after a long flight.

Hotel shuttles

Some upscale hotels include airport pickup in the room rate or offer it for a fee. Always confirm the price when booking.

Cost-saving tips

  • Withdraw somoni from the ATM inside the terminal if your card works — paying in local currency gives you a better rate than paying in USD.
  • If you are travelling with someone and both heading to the centre, share a taxi. Drivers do not charge per person.
  • Avoid exchanging money with unofficial currency changers outside the terminal. Use the exchange counter inside.

Longer trips

If your destination is outside Dushanbe — for example, Varzob Valley (30 km) or Nurek (100 km) — negotiate separately and settle the figure before you set off. Longer journeys to cities like Khujand require a hired car and are a different category of expense entirely.

Bottom line

For most travellers heading to central Dushanbe the choice is between negotiating an unmetered fare on the spot and fixing a price in advance. We cannot tell you what either will cost — there is no tariff to quote and we will not invent one — but we can tell you the difference in convenience after a long flight is significant, and that the one number you can actually know before you land is a pre-booked one.
