Kota Kinabalu International Airport handles several late-night arrivals, particularly flights from Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines) and regional connections from Manila, Seoul, and Shenzhen. Here is what to expect after 10 PM.
What is open
The airport stays open for all scheduled arrivals. Immigration at Terminal 1 (international) is staffed around the clock. The arrivals hall has a few convenience stores and a currency exchange counter, though the exchange booth may close after 11 PM. ATMs are available 24/7.

Transport after dark
Grab is the most popular option in Kota Kinabalu. It works reasonably well at night, though wait times increase after midnight — expect 10-20 minutes versus 5-10 during the day. Fares can be a little higher at night; the app shows the fare before you confirm.
Airport taxis operate from the counter in the arrivals hall. The counter is open for all arriving flights. Fixed fares apply regardless of time:
Grab quotes the fare in the app before you confirm, and that quote is the only reliable figure at night — it moves with how many drivers are awake. For the coupon taxi, the counter fixes the price before you travel; ask there whether a night rate applies.
Pre-booked transfers are available 24/7 with no night surcharge. Your driver monitors your flight and waits regardless of delays. This is the safest option for late arrivals, especially if heading to resorts outside the city.
Buses do not operate after 7:30 PM. Do not rely on public transport for night arrivals.
The drive at night
Kota Kinabalu has minimal traffic after 10 PM. The drive to the city center takes 10-15 minutes at night versus 15-25 during peak hours. Roads are well-lit along the main highway. If heading to beach resorts further north (Shangri-La, Nexus), the road is darker and takes 40-60 minutes.
Safety
Kota Kinabalu is generally safe at night. Stick to Grab or the official taxi counter. Avoid accepting rides from unlicensed drivers in the parking area.
